I use dial up internet upstairs and when someone picks the phone up downstairs, not knowing that I'm connected to the internet, the modem disonnects and I have to re-dial-up.

This has become very frustrating, so I'm looking for a device for the downstairs telephone that tells you when the upstairs modem / phone is in use. ie. a little box with a red and green LED, one wire goes in the box from the wall, and a wire goes out the box to the phone. When the line is in use, the red LED is lit, when it's not the green LED is lit.

Does such a device exist? If so, where can I buy one? I know there are phones with a line in use LED on them but our phone is quite new and cost a lot of money so I'd rather not replace the whole phone.

Edit: Found one, but it's in the US Any in the UK?

I guess that you've got broadband downstairs, if so isn't wireless the answer?

Can you solder? Build your own for a few pence. But beware the high voltages for the ringer.

There's similar circuits around that do the same. Try google.

You could get something like this

A Privacy adaptor.... If you plug it into the phone, picking it up when another device is in use on the line will mean it does not work... So can't disconnect your dial up.

I have one, it seems to stop caller display though!
