I'm quite new to 'proper' VOIP - having used skype for a while, I want to move to a more 'open' system. I've purchased a Zoom 5800 ATA and have made calls using Global Village (some free minutes are bundled when you register your ATA.)

Does anyone know how I can configure this device to connect to an alternative SIP provider? I can configure only the basic settings through the web interface with the username and password they supply.

I have got this up and running for Voipstunt now.

Only thing it doesn't do now is ring my (DECT) phone for any incoming calls. It passes through the PSTN ring for incoming calls to my NTL line if the ATA's power is off so I think the cabling is ok - maybe I need an adaptor with a ring capacitor?

Have you opened up any port forwarding on your router ? Without that done the SIP "Ring" signal won't get through and won't ring the phone attached.

(I have a Cisco 7960 here - so can't comment directly on the Zoom)

Alas, I don't think its a blocked port problem as I reckon I've got the Zoom ATA in the router's DMZ. I can successfully make calls via Vopistunt, so I presume that bit is working?

Also the phone won't ring at all for normal landline calls, which should be passed through the device, which plugs into my standard BT-style socket as well as connecting my broadband ethernet.. (Calls are passed through perfectly when the device has no power and the phone rings.)

I have changed to a rj11 to BT adapter with a capacitor and still the device won't ring my phone at all when powered on, neither for NTL landline calls nor Voipstunt incoming ones

Quite frustrating as call quality for outgoing calls has been excellent, just as good as the NTL phone line I have.

If anyone has any suggestions I'd be pleased to hear from you!

Given what you're saying..... if you "know" there's an incoming call do you get connected ? ie. call it from your mobile and pick it up after you hear 4-5 rings in the mobile....

It certainly smacks of being to do with the ring signalling from the ATA rather than anything more involved (given it applies to both PSTN & VOIP calls).

If the above works (you get connected, ringing fails) - try a DSL filter between the phone and the ATA (DSL filters provide a ring signal on the phone output and is about the cheapest way of doing the ring capacitor properly)

I have tested incoming calls as you suggested and it looks like there's a more fundamental problem with my setup.

When I called my original landline, I heard the normal 'destination is ringing' tone on my mobile, waited about 5 seconds and picked up my (silent) DECT phone, but I just heard a dialling tone from the Voip line, which I think takes priority.

When I called my Voipstunt number I got a tone on my mobile as if I were calling a number in another country (longer tone length) and still got just a dialling tone when I pick up the DECT. I think the call is never actually reaching me as fairly quickly there's a three note tone repeating itself.

I'm not too bothered about incoming Voip calls, but obviously I don't want to miss incoming landline calls (which only work when the ATA is powered off).

Maybe I have some settings wrong on the ATA - the user guide is scant of useful information

Edit - One thing I forgot to say is that I'm on NTL 1mb cable so I haven't got any microfilters to try, but as the incoming Voip calls aren't arriving, I guess I can tackle that first..

OK - that does sound like there's a fundamental problem in the setup.

Have you upgraded it to the latest firmware ? Although a look at http://www.zoom.com/techsupport/voip/voip_5800.shtml suggests it does the upgrade automatically.....

Try resetting to defaults (the process is in the second batch of PDF files there) and starting your setup from there - initially at least I'd concentrate on trying to get the IP side to work with the landline unplugged, then plug in the landline and try to get the landline side to work and then try it with both.

I take it that your device is showing as "Online" by your provider ? eg. I can see my device is online at SIPgate by logging into my SIPGate account.

The VOIP stuff not arriving still smacks of ports not open on the router - can you forward these ports to your ATA and see what happens ?

Port 5060 UDP, Port 8000 - 8012 UDP, Port 5004 UDP, Port 10000 UDP and Port 3478 - 3497 UDP & TCP (Those are the ones that SIPgate ask you to forward to XLite and it's what I have forwarded to my Cisco IP phone)

I can't find any firmware anywhere online - when it arrived, it came preconfigured to use 'GlobalVillage' (which isn't very cheap) and the implication in the manual is that service providers recommend and supply upgrades.

I tried resetting it with a pin in the small hole in the back. It rebooted, but retained my (non-Global Village) settings. I had hoped I could revert to factory defaults to rule anything I have done out.

The Voipstunt Application on my PC says something like "You are logged in elsewhere, do you want to log in again here" when I start up the ATA, so it is logging-in. (And I can make free Voipstunt calls successfully to all the numbers I want to.)

Calls to my (01223 xxxxxx) Voipstunt number also work to my PC, by the way.

I have opened up the ports you suggested and taken the device out of the router's DMZ, and nothing has changed.

I've found I can call out using the NTL phone line by dialling #8 before the number too. (Not dialling #8 defaults to Voip, which is as I'd want it.)

So it so nearly works as I require, except for incoming Landline calls. (not really that bothered about incoming Voip calls..) Frustrating!

Frustrating - and weird..... the frustrating thing is that it'll be something simple that's wrong - but not having ever had one to play with leaves me at somewhat of a disadvantage

The GV thing is because GV is either a division of Zoom or a partner of them - as I read Zoom's help site, it downloaded the firmware from GV (presumably needing to login to GV to do it)

Have you tried the tech support for it ? Zoom always used to be quite good back in the days of 28k8 modems first coming out - when you had to actually call them rather than contact via a web form/chat.

I'll try, but I'm not sure I'll get any tech support, as i think they just say they can't help if you're not using GV.

Something even more weird I've found out - I set up another account with Voipstunt for testing:

If I phone the 01223 xxxxxx number (which goes to my original Voipstunt) from the new voipstunt (using their softphone to originate the call) I get a ringing tone on the PC for about 30 seconds then "call ended - the other party ended the call". Which is sort of expected, as there is no ringing from the ATA.

What's really weird is, if I call the 01223 xxxxxx from my mobile or landline at exactly the same time as from the softphone, the ata phone starts ringing! If I pick it up, the PC reports I am connected, but the mobile doesn't. I cannot hear any voice getting through.

All Very Strange..

Can you get the VOIPStunt working inbound to your PC ? Then try and replicate all the settings on the ATA ? (running out of ideas here lol)

I think voipstunt are doing something a bit weird with their sip service. (Especially with two incoming calls at the same time being the only way to ring the ATA phone!) I've tried 'Voipfone' who give you a free 0560 (I think!) number, and calling that number rings the Dect phone on my ATA when it is configured. So the ATA does work for Voip incoming.

The passtrough of my landine still doesn't work unless there is no power (and it doesn't work with GV either, as I tried a reset to the GV settings which came with the ATA), so maybe I can raise a support call for that. (I think they'll just tell me I need a different BT -> rj11 adaptor though)

edit: Voipstunt is (and has always been) working for the Voipstunt softphone they supply for windows.

Hope you don't mind me asking, but have you had any problems like I've described above? Namely, if someone calls my landline, the ringing tone is not passed through. (Unless the power is off.)

Can you take incoming calls to your landline through this ATA's 'teleport'?

Hi brookester, I tried the landline connected to the TELCO
port and I get the same results as you...

I've tried the supplied 2-wire RJ-11 cable, a 4-wire , and
both with a BT-RJ11 converter "with ring capacitor
fitted" I've also tried an ADSL filter but no joy.

I've just emailed Zoom technical support about this.
If I get a useful reply I'll pass the details on...
I think it may be one of the advanced Zoom configuration
settings...
In the meantime, I'll try some of my "more exotic" adapter
cables !

I've tried lots of weird and wonderful adapters and I have also raised a call for this issue. I sent a message to another user on another forum who reckoned that a firmware upgrade fixed this problem on his unit. I'll also post here if I get anything positive from support.

One thing I have verified (and if you get chance, you could try this on your unit) is that incoming landline calls are reaching the ATA - if I call my landline from my mobile then I hear a 'destination is ringing' tone on the mobile (but no ringing on the landline phone). If I then pick up the landline phone and, at the Voip dial tone, dial #8 (to use PSTN line) the call is connected, so I know that calls are getting through.

I tried what you suggested and got the same results as you.
It didn't seem to make any difference which cable I used, so stuck with the supplied 2 wire RJ11 and put a BT adapter on the end...
When ringing the landline from my mobile, I can hear the far end ringing, but can't actually connect unless I dial #8 on the VOIP phone.
I've had another look in the advanced settings and tried a few things but nothing works...
Does this guy who tried the firmware upgrade say where he got it from ?

I think he reckoned GlobalVillage had remotely flashed his ATA - As far as I know there isn't any 5800 Firmware out in the wild?

That's certainly what I read on the Zoom ATA support site that firmware was loaded automatically from GlobalVillage.... so I guess you need to activate the GV part and configure it and let it happen (I hate that sort of arrangement - I like to control when I get my updates, otherwise they happen at the most inconvenient moment)

..and nobody I've spoken to at GV thinks that a firmware update even exists. Someone must be wrong somewhere..

Meanwhile, I have the ATA reset to defaults and waiting on GV in the hope that something might happen..

I've received an email from Zoom technical support asking me to send them my mailing address so they can
send me an adapter which "should solve the problem" Re: the Telco port / incoming landline call issue.
I've done this, but can't help wondering what they can send me that I haven't already tried ?
All I can think off is a crossover lead, as recently I've read that there isn't a RJ11 cable wiring standard for hardware!
Some devices use pins 2&3 , others 1&4. Just to confuse further, doesn't the BT plug use pins 2&5 as it's a 6-way connector ?
Can anyone confirm if this is true ?
The only source I can find that clearly states they have crossover cables is a company called Videk:

They're posting me what they call 'a hardware solution' too. I've tried a few adapters, including a couple which are supposed to have ring capacitor in them.

As for the pins on the cables I have tried, I can't say how they're wired - I can test them, but as they don't work, I think I'll wait until they've send me the new adaptor/cable. We shall see..!

(forgot to say, I reckon that the firmware update - mentioned by the person in the other forum - is actually a rollback of the firmware to an older version, as GV said something like "we don't think reverting the firmware is necessary" when they asked for my shipping address).

I've tried the connector sent by Zoom support, but I still don't get my phone ringing on landline calls unless the 5800 is off. (The connector was a rj11 male to BT socket to go between my DECT phone and the ATA.)

So, prompt service , but sadly still not working as required

I don't have a Zoom ATA, but I do have sipura and linksys ATAs and those work fine with 5 different phones, using the "RJ11 to BT adaptor w/ capacitor".

I do have them both setup with UK tones, voltages etc, not the default US settings.

If you don't have any luck with the Zoom ATA - it's well worth buying the UNLOCKED PAP2 (www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk, 2 phone ports) or the Sipura SPA-3000 (1 phone port, 1 PSTN port). I would suggest the PAP2 unless you want a port for your landline but that can be tricky to setup with the SPA3000.
