Which do we prefer?

Songs that we like instantly or ones which grow on you slowly?
And which do we get tired of sooner?

The best albums, or at least the ones that have more longevity, are in my opinion those that grow on you.

instantly normally works for me,

Instantly are obviously good to start with but I often find that those are the songs that after a while get on my nerves.

Though I guess the differance is it you are talking about an individual song or an album Certainly with albums those that grow on you are the best and you listen to them a lot longer in months and years to come.

I prefer stuff which grows on you - especially with albums. I have albums which I keep coming back to year after year - unfortunately I also have albums which I bought on impulse, after hearing one son I liked, which rarely get listened to.

I'm going to have to vote for slowly.. OK Computer by Radiohead is a good example. Its the only CD I've ever sold (I suppose I learnt after that one) yet after hearing Paranoid Android a few times I bought it again and now its one of my all time favs, and I have quite a few to choose from now (although not compared to some ppl)

I do find instant songs are good at first but mostly get tiring after a while. (eg sugar babes, round round, loved it at first, but tired of it quickly).
I like songs that grow on you. I think this is the mark of a great song. Oasis 'stop crying your heart out' grew on me, I love the song now.

one of the few 'instant' songs that I still like is 'Bohemian like you' Dandy Warhols.

I'm gonna be picky and say it depends on the song. Normally all songs take a while to grow on me, but there is the odd instant.

I also like a lot of 70's and 80's music too.

I hate songs that grow on me, cos if i dont like something at first, its like i'm changing my opinion on it.

Which makes me think, why didnt i like it before? Usually, songs that grow on me i dont actually like, but hear so much on the radio or tv, i have no choice!

call me an old fart, but what is it with radiohead? *pablo honey* was great, *the bends* was even greater, *OK Computer* was pretty good, but overrated IMHO. since then tho' - tom yorke just seems to have lost the plot completely. i'm sure i read an interview a few years ago, the jist of which was basically that he was so disillusioned with the music biz, that they were putting out as awful music as they would dare, almost as an experiment to see how far people's admiration of the band would stretch.

you probably just need to listen to it a few times I guess, and I've just never had the inclination I'm afraid.

getting back to the topic, I've often found with albums, if you listen, enjoy it, but then can't really remember the tunes instantly, the album will generally be a grower.

on the other hand a tune will often grab me straight away - currently really like *just like a pill*, although someone at work disagreed only today, saying it sounded like roxette! god help me, if I've become that tone deaf....

You're an old... only joking.

I think if you hear songs a lot they do tend to grow on you, esp in my case, if I find I know the words and can sing along (obviously that tends to put other people of them, but c'est la vie).

you are kidding about sing-along-a-radiohead aren't you?

great track out now that I loved straight away is the new single by JJ72 - Formulae - cracking guitar effort.

I have to say I like modern day Radiohead, but I do tend to like the alternative and wierd (read: f*cked up music), and for a band as talented as Radiohead to do it is great.

Its also good to have some unique music at the top of the charts from time to time (ie. Radiohead).

If a song is a grower, that usually means it is intricate and has many different parts and sounds. This also means it will have greater longeivity because you can listen to it hundreds of times and still not notice something which is then obvious once it is pointed out to you. Now that, I like
