All PC DVD's are region free - that's as we understood it and so the PC DVD is thus more flexible that a stand alone DVD Player.

No they're not. For a while (jan 00 i think) all pc dvds have had to be set to their home region. To get round this you need to flash the drive which is dangerous and could destroy it.

All this flashing and potential damage to yr DVD is just totally wrong and simply an attempt at preventing us from buying cheaper DVDs from oversees.

The concept of 'regionising' DVD players is anti-competative, a barrier to trade and potentially illegal itself.

I found this software.....

DVD Genie allows you to modify the region code for popular software-based DVD Players such as Software Cinemaster, PowerDVD, and WinDVD (among a few). It also allows you to tweak these programs with undocumented features to better fit your system. DVD Genie will also allow you to select which program to run when a DVD disc is inserted into the drive. It also contains support for full-screen zooming on wide-screen movies with certain players.

...oooh..sounds like just the ticket

Cut and paste the entire URL above into yr brouser if it don't hyper!

This DVD Speed ripper also sounds rather interesting

afaik DVD Genie only defeats the region protection of the software that you're using to view the film with (PowerDVD, WinDVD, etc).

If your dvd-rom drive itself has been set to a specific region by the manufacturer, then the only way to make it region-free is to try and find a new firmware to download.... as Ryan says, flashing your firmware isn't something to be taken lightly, if you mess up then you're left with a dead dvd-rom drive and a voided warranty

Your best bet is to try and find one of the few suppliers who'll sell you a pre-modified dvd-rom that's guarenteed to be region free - e.g. http://www.overclockers.co.uk

It might be worth trying a local computer fair for pre 2000 stock or looking for a 2nd hand one.

Then, when you've got your region-free dvd-rom drive installed, that's when you need stuff like DVD Genie to fool the software player.
