Hi,

Some advice please.
My pioneer vsx-c301 a/v amp got knocked out by a power cut/surge on Friday. This was just 2 days gone over 12 months, so it is over the warrenty period.

I got it from Richer sounds, any idea if they will take a look/replace? Anybody have any experience with Richer?

thanks.

Take it back and they will most likely offer a repair (at a cost of course).

i think my marantz amp which stopped outputting sound to the left speaker cost around £40 to fix.

hope that helps

Possibly a daft question but...

You have checked that it isn't something simple like a popped fuse? After all the fuses are suposed to commit suicide to protect the rest of the kit in such circumstances.

And not just in the mains plug. There may be a fuse(s) inside the amp around the power supply. If it is on a PCB then it ought to be labeled with it's current rating and type. Just note down what it says. A quick trip to your local Maplin store (if you have one) and a few pence later you may have the amp fixed.

Yeah i know what you mean Ive had a few problems with power surges in my last house it blew my tv but i got it replaced under my insurance, check to see if u have anything under your insurance if u have any? and the house before that I was on telewest i came home to find my awnsermachine blown and my modem on my computer and after a bit of chatting to the people at telewest where they were very helpful i got it all replaced through them, because they admitted it was there fault and a surge had gone down the line.

You'll have trouble getting the electricity supplier to admit it was their fault! Nothing ever is!

If you have very delecate equipment (thinking of things like Sky+, other forms of tv recorders - freeview pvr, dvd, high end hifi/big cost plasma), you would be wise to invest in a combined Surge protector/power backup (UPS) system. Novatech do a combined "low cost" unit that looks like a fat 4 bar extension lead for around £70. I know from my own experience with a freeview pvr and another who has Sky+, that these systems dont like having their power switched off and on over and over with a few seconds.

I already checked the fuse in the plug, Chris, but I do not want to open the amp unless I absolutely have to.

About the insurance, I have an excess of £150, and the amp cost me £139, so it is not cost effective.

And I will now seriously consider a surge protector! (bolted horse and door come to mind, though!)

I cannot be bothered with contacting the electricity supplier, they are guaranteed to be a pain, and not accept responsibility, unless anybody knows otherwise.

In total, I had about 6 power failures this weekend!

Just to finish this tale, I went to Richer and explained the situation, and they offered to repair it free of charge.

So, I can safely say Richer are a good bunch od people!

You can also try Belkin as they do them and will compensate you if the equipment connected gets fried thanks to a surge/spike. I have my Hifi/TV/DVD/Phone/Aerial all through their protectors to try and minimise any problems.

Most decent manufacturers of UPS's do offer a 'connected equipment warranty'. I personally have used (on various sites) APC equipment from .3-6KVA and have always found it all spot on.
