Install problems (Newbie)
Tomble
27-04-2006
Hello,
I finally got my toppy out the box last night, (quite late) and connected it up.

Following the manual to install.

It would not detect any TV channels and there seemed to be a black type of snow falling on the screen.

This morning I removed all non-essential wires to DVD etc and just had the one ariel then scart to the TV. The same thing happened. It had the top (i think signal) at 78%-68% fluctuating but the quality was at 0%.

Do you have any idea please for me to try when I get in?

http://www.dtg.org.uk/consumer/cover...tcode=po12+3jj

The ariel comes in from out side and when in the TV gives a normal signal.

Thanks Tom

Have you got the aerial connected to the ANT 1 input socket, which is on one end? You should have the aerial going in there, then the short supplied loop cable from RF LOOP 1 OUT goes to ANT 2.

Presumably you're doing the automatic search for channels via the installation menu?

The strength and quality settings will vary depending on which frequency it's scanning.

Nigel.

It can be used to power an aerial amplifier via the coax cable. Just leave it set to off.

Hi Tom just set 5v to off. Edit post crossed with DX's.

Nigel only described one way of setting up so just possible some confusion here. Just to check; can you describe exactly how you have the cables connected.

LOL no i Know he said one way but I tried it that way and without the wire (so just the antenna in and then with the link cable)

I have been suggested to try direct into ant2 as it may be a broken tuner.(which would blow)

It is a new Toppy, is it? Not one that you have bought on eBay or somewhere else? And you are doing the channel scan from the installation menu?

I sold me 9200T to a guy in London who then complained that there were no TV channels. D'er.

I told him that although Winter Hill TX's were good, they weren't that good.

Tom

Having read your problems here and over on Toppyuk; Two possibilities

1 Your aerial (which is OK for terrestial) is not set up to receive DTT signal from Rowbridge.

2 Your Toppy is broken This is unusual but possible.

Have you managed to find a friendly neighbour who gets Freeview. Trying it on their aerial might help to find problem.

Digital Direct, eh? That'll be one of the Toppies with Guide+ then?

Without being able to try it till I get home if it is number 1) would a signal booster from argos help?
If I get one at lunch time would it be worth the £10
If it is 2 then I just get a replacement.

Don't buy a signal booster. If the quality is 0% as you said, you have nothing to boost. We'll help you sort it when you get home.

OK

The bedroom aerial does not want to work however the cheap 4 for 1 in the spare room does.
As yet I cant get 1 and 2 (BBC multiplex) and channel 5 is very jerky but fine on NTL downstairs

Any ideas?

(I have extended the aerils more from the small unit, would a booster help now?)

Edit:
I have found BBC now but all the channels are very jerky (digital blocking) despite both bars meauring quality and service are about 90%

Tomble I find that *sometimes* people get results by doing a manual scan with these sorts of problems. Especialy if the machine is trying to tune to a transmitter that might not necesserilly be the best one. Thia will involve deleting all the channels on the machine and telling it which freaquencies your chosen transmitter uses for all six mux's. I dont know if you or anyone else feels this would be a worthwhile excersize for tomble?

Well, it would mean he might get an answer tonight as to whether he needs a new aerial.

Presumably his aerial would point to what the TV engineer had originally considered to be the strongest transmitter.

'Tis bird nesting season though...

Thats what I was thinking - about the aerial already pointing to the right transmitter already. But even then you get a tiny fraction whose machines seem to pick the wrong transmitter because it happens to be in range. I agree this would probably be a surer way for tomble to discover if there is a problem with the box or not tonight. If he hasnt tried already. Hes not posted a reply yet - probably on the roof

Appears (on the other place) he has discovered he had an aerial that worked all along; needed to be plugged into the Toppy apparently.

The portable aerial got the channels but a really bad signal. (despite being 90%) and the channels are all blocky.
However tried the downstairs aerial and it worked a treat.
Its great, I love it.
Thanks for all the advice.

Well I'm glad your sorted Tom and hope GF has calmed down.

Funny actually after all that because my neighbour has just dropped round and asked me to sort out Freeview for her son tomorrow in his new flat. She has left me a Logik STB and yes; an amplified indoor aerial Must be alright though because it has - Receives Freeview - printed on the box. I am not hopeful.
