o2 Roaming in South Africa

My parents are going to South Africa next week and they have Nokia 1100 phones on o2 PAYG. Will these work in South Africa?

They will only be using it to text back to England whilst on tour in the country. The phones are only dual band.

o2 Customer service say that a tri-band phone will be required, however there website suggests that "Any GSM Phone" can be used on Vodacom, MTN and Cell C.

Has anyone tried this?

I'm not if Vodacom are o2 roaming partners or if it may be Cell C or MTN

Any help would be usefull.

Thanks in advance... ”

Yep a dualband phone will work, i quick google comes up with the answer.

Sorry I just went on the o2 website and found some conflicting info. As there CS told me only tri bands could be used.

Edited my opening post before seeing your reply. Thanks, I feel a bit more confident now.

Thanks I think I found the website you might have looked at, it was "Travel Insider"

I'm a bit annoyed that the o2 CS told me it wasn't possible. particularly as the call cost me about £2.

I've only just ported my parents from Orange to o2 and thought it might have been a bad mistake when I saw it was possible on Orange's website.

I happen to know FOR A FACT that a dual band WILL work.

My (South African) cousin gave me his old Nokia 3210 when he got an upgrade.

And as far as I know - the 3210 IS a dual-band phone.
