Well, I was of the Davison/Baker II generation and thought Peri was the biz-ness, but I have to say Rose is certainly a contender...somehow all the old companions have added value in the nostalgia department which may explain why she's not featured yet...either that or people think she's just rubbish. Not me though. Oh no.

You could tell she really cared for him - her leaving scene made me cry.

Brave heart Tegan!”

I agree. Tegan definitely had an unrequited thing for the Doc, but he omly had eyes for Nyssa. Trouble is, so did Adric. This is why the Doctor sacrificed Adric to get him out of the way. He could have saved him, living in a time machine and all, but didn't.

I like rose

I think when she decides to Leave, a good replacement would be Tara Palmer Tompkinson -- I think she had a nice posh accent, and I can just imagine her getting into perils with the Dr, and shoulting "DOCTORRRRRR!" just as the cliffhanger comes....

Yes, that was me on the Outpost Galifrey site under a different name! I always thought he had a soft spot for her too in spite of being so impatient with her!

Just read the comment about the doctor and Nyssa. I never noticed anything between them even though I rewatched all the episodes again recently.

Peri for me.Reinforced by Peter Davison in DWC last year when he said the only thing he remembered about filming his regeneration scene was staring down Nichola Browns cleavage.Top bloke old Peter

Yes - that really made me laugh! And when I watched that episode again recently I couldn't view it in the same way anymore!

Tegan Jovanka is my all time favourite. Much like Sarah Jane, I imagine she had a very difficult time adjusting to life post Doctor. I would like to think she ended up as some kind of peace campaigner - she left the Doctor unable to cope with the amount of death and destruction in the universe. I hope she found happiness.

My other favourites in order are:

Romana II
Adric
Perpugillium Brown
Ace
Sarah Jane Smith
Susan Foreman
Jamie McCrimmon

So what was that stuff I remember about the Highland Fling then? I don't ever remember seeing him after that! As I was obviously very small at the time, there is a possibility that all that happened on some other TV show after Fraser quite the show, but I'm sure I remember PT and the girl assistant (Zoe, was it?) being there too, in the TARDIS

No, I've watched Dr Who from the beginning and Rose is definately not rubbish. She's very good, but I think you're right she just hasn't got the added nostalgia factor yet.

Peri for me, but again I think it's nostalgia/hormones that account for that!

I just hope Liz Sladen has been made aware by the powers that be how much she is loved and missed by so many. she truly was and still could be the best companion ever and I want it documented that the only episode of the 1st and second series I have saved to dvd was last nights.Imo she made Doctor Who and when she left it was like losing a loved one....

The absolutely delightful Sarah Jane Smith. No-one else comes close.

Although Victoria (Deborah Watling) was a lovely lass in earlier shows.

Zoe. Esp in Mind Robber. (well her bottom anyway)

So we could create the perfect companion:

Sarah Janes face
Peri's Breasts
Zoes bottom
Polly's legs
Romana II voice
Romana I brain
K9's loyalty

Rose is definately a contender Billie Piper's been great.
But there is lots of nostalgia with Sarah Jane, Jo Grant and everyone else Rose hasn't got that as she's fresh.
But Liz Sladen was ace in SR on Saturday - hope we see her in the future or in Torchwood.

I think given her background as a jounalist we might see SJS turn up in Torchwood. It did cross my mind at one point that they might recruit Liz Sladen as a key player/regular in Torchwood but alas not....well not yet anyway.

For me there was and still is only one

Sarah Jane Smith!!

However Nyssa (Sarah Sutton) and Teegan who really irritated me at first but got to like her after Timeflight when she was left behind, are close second and third.

Male companions - Ian Chesterton and Jaimie (loved his innocence). Also Turlough - liked the idea of a companion who worked against the Doctor and was never fully trusted even at the end.

I can appreciate Peri's assets but hated the whining american accent.

Bottom of the list Ace, Mel and Harry (hated all that upper class " I say old chap/girl".

Does 1's brain differ from 2's?!

I must go with the majority here and claim SJS as the queen of the companions. I do however believe that Romana II comes a close second - and am surprised that I seem to be just about the only one to think so...

Lalla Ward had a brilliant on screen relationship with TB - definitely up there with ES IMO. The series had, however, entered what for many was a far too comical phase, and maybe she's overlooked because of that...

I think some companions benefit in terms of popularity after they have left (sometimes a long time after they have left), and I think Rose will be even more loved in years to come, long after Billy has moved onto pastures new. After all, for millions of kids she is going to be their first companion, the same way Sarah Jane was mine.

I think sometimes it can work the other way too. I thought Ace was the business at the time, but I can't really watch those episodes now because (oohh, dangerous waters I know but . . . ) I don't actually think she was at all believable.

Again, I loved Peri at the time and I still find her believable, but why would the Doctor travel with someone who moans all the time and wants to leap back inside the TARDIS at the first sign of danger?

As for Tegan. Well, I still think she is terrific. But it is interesting watching her first and second season because I liked Tegan so much I never really gave much attention to Nyssa. But now I can see why Peter Davison says Nyssa was his favourite companion. She was smart, capable and very brave and travelled with the Doctor because, in a way, after her father died and she lost Traken he became her family.

She was really a perfect companion for him. I think she would be far more rated if she had had the Doctor to herself for a whole season.
