Yes the Aussies have AC/DC, and the Yanks have Metallica, but come on - the best rock comes from our humble little island!

Who is your favourite? Personally I love the maiden (being an eastender myself), and Judas Priest are pretty cool too. I love Def Leppard as well, and every Sunday for me is Black Sabbath day. I'm sacrificing a sheep whilst listening to War Pigs as we speak.

i think Black Sabbath are the best hard rock british group of their time i'm not sure about anyone at the moment though as nobody particularly stands out to me.

I saw Judas Priest a few times in the 70s, and they were okay.

I also saw Black Sabbath and Deep Purple who were way ahead of them. Deep Purple In Rock is a real rocker of album, and Machine Head is even better.

Anyone remember Saxon?

Aside from the greats like Led Zep, Deep Purple and Black Sabbath I'd have to plump for UFO and Thin Lizzy as prime exponents of Brit Rock at its best

Lights Out, Rock Bottom to name only a couple of stand out tracks from UFO, though they apparently had some young German whizz kid playing guitar

Strangers In The Night is a superb album and not a bad track to be heard (IMO)

Lizzy were another band that produced tight powerful rock songs one moment but also, thanks to the sadly missed PL, could also turn out a great soulful bluesy ballad. Take a listen to 'Still In Love With You' from the Live & Dangerous album and you'll get the picture.

Not forgetting Whitesnake of course - more blues oriented rock and cock rock at its best

Shame that decent rock music of that era is now looked down upon as something of a joke when I think those bands had far more talent and musical integrity than many of todays.

I thought this thread was going to on about hardocre rock - the kind where you get all these sub cultures of 15 year olds who pretend to be vegans and go "straight edge" in the name of music...

without the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal there's be no Metallica, just imagine if Diamond Head hadnt existed then Metallica wouldnt have been so well off for ripping off bands.

AC/DC may well have started out in Australia but they're all of Brit descent apart from Phil Rudd, so we can claim them as well

I agree about Lizzy and UFO, shame i never got to see UFO in their heyday. Whitesnake i'd dispute the 'cock rock at its best' quote, they went really downhill when David Coverdale
abandoned the blues based sound for US cock rock.
I love Praying Mantis' Time Tells No Lies album released in 1981, unfortunately as with so many bands they never got the promotion they deserved and were promptly dropped.

Judas Priest in the Seventies would probably have been great, but I only saw them in the 80s and they were pure comedy.

Preying Mantis? Christ! There's a name from the past. I saw them on the Metal for Muthas gig at The Lyceum with Iron Maiden and Diamond Head. Wasn't particularly impressed.

Sabbath were great but I never got to see them originally until Dio joined. I saw them with Ozzy later, but it's not the same. My mate saw them with Ozzy, but Van Halen supported and he didn't realise they weren't Black Sabbath until later. His mum made him wear a tie because he was going to the theater.

AC/DC are, indeed, now officially British! Says so in last month's Classic Rock. Oh yes. What a magazine.

Come on guys! THE band? IRON MAIDEN! How many bands, even today, rip off Adrian Smith's riffs. The "thinking man (or woman) 's Heavy Metal band", with lyrics about deep issues as well as just rockin' out (listen to "The rime of the ancient mariner" off "Powerslave" to hear what a real epic metal song sounds like!
Oh, and still going strong, and still legions of fans, and making more every year. Eternal.

Interestingly my favourite of theirs is probably High and Dry because it's so well produced, and I particularly like "Lady Strange". But all the others very good too. They might not be a very prolific band, but what they do is good by me

Yeah i would say Sabbath too. whatver anyone says they are the fathers of all metal. some people credit the stones with that but just take a listen tothe first song they wrote, 'black sabbath' and masters of reality. released in '71 or something...

I agree though, these days its all a bit dodgy... the scandanavians have taken the metal flag and made it their own whereas we have an influx of 'arty' indie rock bands that manage to all get away with adding pomp to stuff thats been done before rather than anything interesting... I live in New Cross which is supposed to be a hotbed of new talent. maybe it is but I wouldnt say interesting talent! c'mon guys, lets do better than that! ok rant over...haha

UFO - Pete Way is a genius
