Terrible Acting

I would just like to ask if I am the only one that thinks that soap acting has gotten particularly atrocious in the last year or two. The 'special' episode in Eastenders with Sharon and Phil the other week was especially bad. What is wrong? I know for a fact that there are plenty of much better actors in the UK, and people dont exactly have to be extremely good looking to get a part in soaps. I also understand rehearsal periods are short, if any, but really, does anyone agree that the standards are quite pathetic and very unbelievable now?

A bit of a generalization that IMO
Probably the fall in the standard of acting is linked to the increase in the number of weekly episodes in the major soaps.
I think Dev in Corrie is the worst- emphasises on all the wrong words in his sentences

What about Devs cousin, he's more wooden than a wooden plank.

The casting department must have had an off-day when they chose her!!!

The worst actress EVER award on Corrie has to go to Devs Aunty Maya. I literally used to cringe in embarassment whenever she spoke.
DItto with Audrey Truman from Eastenders.

Nope, the worst ever was the man who played Vic's father. He used to play every line like a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company. And then he did something bad on a train and got sacked.

If you're talking about Saheed Jaffrey (O.B.E.) - then you're very wrong - the man is a legend in the world of acting. He's done over 70 movies and television series including:

Passage to India
The Man Who Would Be King
Ghandi
The Far Pavilions
Jewel in the Crown
My Beautiful Laundrette
The Horsemen

...playing alongside people like Sean Connery and Omar Shariff.

I was amazed to see him in Coronation and loved his performances. The programme always picks up when seasoned actors like Roy Barraclough, Maureen Lipman, Jack Smethurst and our own John Savident make an appearance, you can tell they have all been properly trained - compared to most 'soap stars' who we've never heard of prior to their appearance.

I liked Ravi....he was great. He should never have been sacked from Corrie. I bet they`re regretting their decision now.
The actors on EastEnders have done far worse things off screen and they`re still there. From reading the antics in the newspapers of what they get up to is like a soap opera in itself..

the worst actor at the moment is kurk on corrination street. whenhe's deliverinh his lines, he looks as if he is reading an autocue and then when he's just acting naturally, he seems so wooden it's untrue, you could use his as a coffee table.

The trouble is the number of episodes the soaps are expected to churn out. Look at the early Eastenders. The acting from a cast of unknowns (other than Wendy Richard) is of a much higher standard than the current cast (with people like Richard, Ian Lavender, Barbara Windsor etc.) They only had to shoot two episodes a week, which meant more time for rehearsal and script development. Now I understand that most of it is done in one or, at most, two takes - and while the acting is still better than in US soaps it's not the same as it was.

I couldn't agree more! Dev is just atrocious - he shows any kind of emotion (far, anger, surprise) by just raising his voice. Appalling.

Nonsense! She's one of the more believeble characters! (And why is it that nobody can spell Deirdre properly?)

i dont think its the acting thats declining in ALL cases, i think its the story lines are becoming more an more rediculous, and the lines they have to say... i couldnt do it with a straight face so i do have a bit of respect for these actors.

As i said its not in all cases, i mean HOLLYOAKS is a complete joke I cant watch it because i feel so embarrassed for most of them, did anyone see the alex and anna scenario at the airport? it had me in tears but not of sorrow!

The worst actor on EastEnders is Asif.
He only has two expressions on his face...startled or startled. Ok then one expression.

He certainly is

He's exactly the same on and off screen.

I think Donna is wooden, though she is only temporary so doesn't really matter

I thought tonight's episode was awful. Someone should tell the scripwriters that all that community stuff finished in the 1970s. Most Eastenders these days don't even know their neighbours.

Well the whole show is based on a 1950's model anyway.

No-one watched tv, no-one has a washer, they all work in the square, never venture out

Also they're the only people in London that dont commute into the city for work. And where 17 year olds drink orange juice in the local pub cos the landlord knows their age.

Maybe we should start a new thread laughing at Eastenders storylines. 'Cor blimey guvnor' barely an episode passes without something daft occuring. Anyway I had better run, I have to grab some lunch down the cafe' before popping down my local to chat to me neigbours, lol!
