you don't. The joys of buying into something "non-standard", huh?

Best you can hope for is that you can use it as an audio device - unlikely the buttons will work with "not Skype" software.
Welcome to closed proprietary standards. |

It's amazing me still that lots of people think Skype is great until you start looking at just how restrictive their service is. Proper VOIP devices may cost you slightly more initially than proprietry services like Skype, but the benefits are clear. Avoid Skype!

oh please give it a rest
SKYPE is amazing i use it to talk to my grandmother and parents abroad (they are behind a wierd ISP firewall ) and nothing else SIP based could connect without me twiddling constantly (which i cant cos the firewall is on the ISP level who block like everything) while skype works every time and works well. voice quality is top notch. so what if the hardware is not standard there are enough skype users out there that "non" standard devices appear regularily ie the linksys cit200 for example and the netgear WIFI phone. and as for cost they are cheap enough and big enough and well known enough that people are willing to give credit card details for services i dont think id trust some of these two bit tiny VOIP providers for SIP as they might not be around in a days time or might rip me off. Generally speaking if you dont like skype dont use it but dont knock it and answer with barbs like non standard etc etc its not helpful let the flames begin. (ducks) JEREMY |

Skype is fine, I've used it since beta 0.0001!
Now it's popular it's just trendy not to like it. Same old same old... I like the 'real voip providers are a little more expensive'... two weeks go when I checked sipgate were charging 9p per min to call a mobile and skype 1.7p (approx). Here's the deal all you, "I don't like anything that's now popular because it isn't *kool*" I use skype everyday, skype to skype and calling landlines and mobiles using skypeout. I've never had one single problem and to say it's like people are in the same room is not an understatement. At the end of the day you need a semi-decent headset. Speaker phones etc. really are never going to be as good. So... for me skype works and as I said, it's literally as clear as a bell. You all admit other similar services are more expensive... ever heard of... 'more money than sense?' You pay the higher prices... that's what you pay to say you're "kool" right?

Skype Hype is propriety, it's OK for the kids as it is a toy town service, once you grow up you can then play with the big boys and use a proper VoIP service.
Other services exspensive? Skype charges you for an incomming number! Sipgate Don't. Skype charges you for calling landlines, for 12 months I have had free calls to landlines in the UK and many other countries all for an inital fee of €6. Keep Skype Hype for the kids. |

LOL Skype is dearer to call mobiles that Sipgate, you got your decimal points all mixed up, who feels stupid now?Skype to UK mobile are not 0.14 or 0.16p per minute they are 16.6p per minute. You are however correct Sipgate charge 9.9p per minute cheaper than Skype Hype by 6.7p/min Skype to 0870 are not 0.118p/min but 11.8p/min. However you are correct Sipgate are 7.51p/min, which is 4.29p/min cheaper than Skype hype. Skype to 0845 8.4p/min - Sipgate 3 p/min Skype to 01 and 02 numbers 1.4p - Sipgate 1.19p/min. Yeah, Skype hype makes you feel real good when you are paying more than a proper VoIP service! Every rate there is cheaper on Sipgate than it is on Skype. On VoIP Stunt I pay zero pence. Money and sense, yeah we save money, you don't have any sense, LOL what a muppet! No one said similar services are dearer, you can if you want run them the same as Skype, software on the PC and a crappy USB device, but if you want a real service whereby you don't need the PC on at all, then for a few extra £s you can have a device that you plug a normal phone into and not need the PC on. You carry on playing with the kids toy service if you want, us grown-ups with use a proper service. LOL - You have to laugh!
