I think that is explored in season 2, but as far as I know we are still only a month or so after they fell from the air, it's not been a year.

The producers are made him go on a diet a few months ago cause of the complaints. He lost loads.

he has had to loose weight because of this, i remember this being in the paper. he looks thinner, but wont appear thinner till later on in series. and i say next break it will be on.

How are all the men still relatively hair free on their faces? Some are completely clean shaven, and even the ones with a bit of hair have no more growth than my other half if he's not shaved for about 3 days...???

Well they were on a huge plane. A few hundred people are bound to have shaving foam and razers in their luggage.
