I have a Denon amp with just the basic left/right speaker outputs. Is it possible to still hook up a sub to this? or are subs solely reserved for amps with a Sub out...like home theatre setups. Probably a stupid question, but I appreciate your answers, thanks.

Many subs have 2 sets of inputs:

Low level. These are phono inputs which you connect to the subwoofer output on an AV amp.

High level. These are speaker cable inputs (banana plug or spring clip) which you connect to the speaker connectors of a stereo amp.
Some subs have 2 sets of high level connectors - you go from the amp to the sub, then the sub to your speakers. Some subs have just one set of connectors, so you need to plug 2 sets of cables into your amp - one set to your sub, the other set to your speakers. If your amp has A and B speaker connectors, you can connect the sub to the B connectors.

Another option can be to connect the pre-out to the sub and it will function in the same way as with the high level input.

If your amp has a sub out then the sub should be set to its highest cross over and let the amp deal with the cross over.

If your amp doesnt have a sub out and you connect it either via the pre outs or the high level then you need to set the cross over yourself - this should generally be slightly higher than the lowest frequency produced by your main speakers.

For both the gain needs to be set but amps with a self setup facility obviously takes care of this for you.

My amp is a Denon DRA-455. A picture of the back of the unit is here.
It is bi-wired, do you know if any of the subs that Richer Sounds stock would work with it (just for ease)? I like the look of their Gale and Mission options. Gale STORM 8 and Mission M2SAS. Thank you for all your help.
