Orange question (poss stupid)
moordown66
04-05-2006
I have an Orange PAYG sim in my phone. My wife has just bought me an Orange phone off the internet which comes with its own PAYG sim.

Is there any reason, or any circumstance where/why I can't just swap the sim out of my existing phone, put it in the new one and carry on regardless?

As I said, both are orange PAYG.

Thanks

it should be ok but anything is possable with orange
if it dont work just ring orange on the 0800 number and ask for a sim update for the new sim with your old number then that will work

Thanks.

If I have to upgrade the sim my new phone comes with to my existing number, presumably I'll a) lose all my phonebook and b) all my existing credit?

No reason at all why you can't, putting it simply.

Saying that though, if your current handset is, say, a 3410, and the new handset is a colour/camera phone with mms/gprs and the like you'll need to ring orange to get the new services enabled as the old sim will only be set up to work with the 3410... if that makes any sense. It's easy enough to do though, they'll just send you some sim updates.

Or, if you like you can get them to swap your number on to the new sim. Again, they'll just send some sim updates but everything will be set up at once, however you'll lose everything stored on your old sim (e.g. logos) but any credit/active extras and so on will swap sims along with your number.

Ah, right. Old phone is bog standard. New one has G3, bluetooth and camera (although I'm not going to send pics to anyone....too tight!)

Thanks for that.

No problem

Pardon my nosing, but G3? Do you mean 3G? If so, they won't actually set that up on your old sim no matter what. You'd need to swap your number onto the new sim if you wanted that.

Also, pic wise, if you get it set up you should be able to get the Try bundle: 30 MMS for 30 days - price; totally free

Surely they can register it as an upgrade?

if they do you will lose the numbers on your old SIM.
Harry, it sucks

If the old sim works in the phone, can't you put it in and copy the contacts onto the phone, then put the new sim in, get the number updated and copy the contacts back to the new sim? As for credit, there might be some on the new sim anyway?

there'll be a quid, I think.

I'm sure they allow upgrades on pay as you go, but don't know their actual process!!

Putting the old SIM in the new phone is a good way to get your contacts across, but do it BEFORE you get them to register the upgrade, if they do!

If you register your upgrade, then they'll give you free credit as a reward.

It depends on how much you have topped up over a 6 month period. I've been connected since July 2004, but orange only started the offer last Summer and i've been told that I will get £20. However it is paid out in small installments like £2.50 per month.

Its a way of keeping you on Orange!

To register upgrades and new sims call 0800-079-0006 and enquire if your eligable for an upgrade reward.

And don't forget to register your most called Orange mobile number known as magic numbers. If you register a magic number with Orange, you can call it for up to an hour and just pay for the first minute.

Yeah there'll be a quid. If the number gets swapped from the old sim onto the new sim that quid should be added onto the credit that comes across too - it was when I swapped my prepay number onto a 3G sim anyway.

As for the upgrade process - pass. AFAIK, to upgrade on Orange Pay and Go you have to tell them you're upgrading when you buy the new handset so that they can apply any upgrade discount, free credit (which they pay in dribs and drabs) and whatnot at that point.

In any case, swopping your number to a new sim can be done at any point.
