This number keeps calling me repeatedly, letting the phone ring four times then hanging up. Ringing them back results in a recorded message explaining that they're a market research firm - any idea how to make it go away? (I'm on T Mobile and haven't given my number to more than three people, all friends.)

Rule of thumb for me is if someone calls and lets it ring just once or a few times and then hangs up before I can answer, I dont call back as it may be scam or waste of time, besides if someone wants to reach you, its their progative to call you.

As for the other suggestion with the telephone preference scheme, not sure if that will instantly to resolve the problem. Check with your mobile operator to see what options you have to resolve the problem.

I haven't answered them - I had to drive most of the way down the country yesterday so couldn't answer each time they called, and this morning I just couldn't be arsed to respond.

This is part of the reason I very rarely give out my personal mobile phone number, and even then never give it to a business - that mobile is there for my convenience, not anyone else's - it's up to me whether I answer or not.

Ow, my eyes. That website - is it meant to be a spoof? It's like something out of Pseud's Corner!

Whether you give your number our or not, makes no difference, they usually just randomly call phone numbers until they hit on a working number. The computer system call more numbers than there are representives to take the calls, they hope they get the maths right so not to end up with silent calls, but often more people answer than they thought might.

Worth signing up to the silent callguard service too - http://www.tpsonline.org.uk/tps/news2.html
