Well think again!

If you are with Telewest,NTL,Wight Cable or are using a Cable and Wireless line and want to move to a service provider such as TalkTalk.

Well you can't, unless:

You want a new phone number
Want to pay £74.99 for a new line if you haven't got one.
You use a shortcode dial service provider such as 18866

To move to TalkTalk from a non-BT line, you cannot port your existing number as it will not be compatible with TalkTalk. So, you might as well ask BT for a new phone number when you sign up. How inconvenient is that???

So you won't be able to take advantage of free broadband, unless you don't mind changing your number.

Like when cable first came out, you couldn't keep your number when you switched from BT to cable, it's only a very recent thing that you could keep your number.

Five years ago I "ported" my BT number to Telewest. Last May I moved it back to BT - no charge. On the day it was connected I was able to order a UKOnline LLU internet connection that was operational 8 days later.

I do not know if a non-BT originated number can be moved to BT, but presumably Ofcom does.

There is no problem porting the number. It is the fact that the original 'donor company' still has to route incoming non-local calls, that causes problems with voice LLUs. They don't have comprehensive arrangements with the cable companies to manage that process.

Your BT number would still have involved BT in routing non-local calls to it whilst you were with Telewest. When you moved back to BT it reverted to a completely native BT number, with no restrictions for voice LLUs.

Data LLUs aren't affected anyway, as they don't need to route voice calls. I'm awaiting activation with Be Unlimited on my BT/TW ported number line.

And the same charge for a second line!

All that would be required in most cases is for the engineer to connect up the second pair which goes into all BT served houses anyway, so they are taking the mick with that one.

Even if BT gave us gold plated sockets it's still a rip off

Thats terrible Telewest only charge £25 installation for a 2nd line and you can get that waived if you tried.

The first line is also FREE installation as well. BT are money robbing b*****ds!!!
