I tried this as my brother lives in the Republic of Ireland and only has a mobile. I first tried DiscountDial (7p per min) and was told that there was no reply at my brother's end in Ireland. I then tried Abroadtel (8p per min) and was told that I was being connected but after two mins there was nothing so I hung up.
I followed the instructions correctly so why wasn't I connected to Ireland? My brother says that his mobile didn't even ring so how can DiscountDial say there was no reply? He lives within sight of his mobile company's mast so it wasn't as if he was out of coverage or anything? Can someone recommend a company where you actually get put through, please?

18185
From a BT landline, www.18185.co.uk
Unfortunately, they charge 4p connection and 14p/minute to call an Irish mobile. OTOH, BT charge up to 40p/minute! |

just-Dial
How about Just Dial?
International calls for just 1p per minute at weekends or 4p per minute during weekdays on access number: 0844-570-4564 Or calling UK Mobiles for just 6p per minute by using Discount Dial. Go to www.discountdial.co.uk Or why not use Mobile World. You just dial directly plus a 2 in front of international numbers and calls cost as little as 5p per minute. Calls are routed through Opal Telecom of which Mobile World,Fresh and talktalk are part of the same group (Carphone Warehouse plc) who also own Opal Telecom. |

Skype
If you take a euro credit with Skype, you can dial most
countries for 1.7 cents a minute(no vat) and this is also the rate for calling mobile numbers in the USA. |

Why bother with Skype when 18185 charge 0.5p/min to the USA from your regular landline.
For VoIP Skype are one of the dearer if not dearest providers. |

An open standards based product based on SIP - your Boss should understand that Skype is like a monopolistic supplier - they have no competition, so prices reflect that.
Using open standards like SIP or IAX there are more providers - so consequently there is competition - competition means that the prices are generally lower. Of course it also means that you have free VOIP to VOIP calls. For a start, try something like www.sipgate.co.uk - they give you a free local (not lo-call/0845) incoming PSTN number, and the opportunity to call out after adding credit (rates not clever, but for demo purposes it's a sub-£50 project including 2 USB handsets and some call credit) |
