Hey Everyone,

I need some help with my DVD Player (pacific dvd-1002). Its always worked fine and I've had no problems until last week. I'm not very technically minded so I'm gonna try to explain this simply. It seems that the player will not play certain parts of DVDs and when it reaches a certain part (usually a bit after the halfway mark) it returns to the main menu as though the DVD has finished. Does anyone know whats going on? Any ideas on how to fix this?

Thanks, T101

If this happens only on certain discs...have you tried cleaning them?
Is the DVD player out of guarantee?

yep, it is *usually* a grubby disc

it only needs a tiny smear for the laser to think that it is at the end of the disc and stop it playing.

Just give it a gentle wipe with a soft cloth, the type you get to clean spectacles with is usually the best and safest sort

(although I have been known to use a tissue, the corner of my shirt, the edge of the settee, a cushion cover.......................... )

Its every disc, and they are all clean. So the problem is definitely with the player. And I'm pretty sure its out of guarantee.

well, in truth, it's probably cheaper to buy a new one rather than pay up front for a "£25 to open it up to see what's wrong" cost and then the cost of a new laser

Was it an expensive model??

I bought a Sony a year ago now - cost me £49 and it's PERFECT!!

unfortunately, we are living in a "throw it away and get a new one" age

Doubt it's worth repairing. Pacific ones are pretty cheap I think?

Probably replace it with something with way more functionality for £20-£30. They're virtually disposable in that price range .....

Try a DVD Lens Cleaner - After 7 or 8 plays my old Pioneer DVD deck come back to life and has been flawless since

Cleaning the laser lens won't make a bit of difference to these symptoms...the laser assembly travels along a chromed pole (possibly two in some mechanisms) called a "Sled" which probably has some hardened grease on it impeding its movement...hence the reason it sticks at the same point...the cost of getting a repairman to look/repair it equates to the price of a new DVD player.
If you're able...you could attempt to fix it yourself by stripping it down and cleaning/re-greasing the sled.

Nah mine was unable to read the second layer on the disc, as when it was fixed the same point had a very small stutter on the layer change (as usual). Once it had been cleaned everything was okay again
