Yes!

It all adds to the drama.

And was there any need to quote the whole thing? You could have snipped it and still had a moan...

There was every need as it is very wrong to misquote someone.

I take it that this thread is to be the main thread for Saturday's episode?

It's just that it's title implies so, and we don't want it to get confused with a duplicate thread that would turn up in a forum search should anybody need to look for it for future reference.

As it's already dropped onto page 2, I suggest that in the future we don't start episode threads so ridiculously early, days before the episode airs.
Maybe anything before Friday is just too early.

I concur. Recent episode threads have started early and quite soon they meander their way through all kinds of subjects that have little to do with the episode. Those diversions are fun, and they have their place on the forum, but I don't think this is the place - at least not until the excitement of Saturday night has had a chance to calm down.

The 'rule' handed down from the mods last year was to start the episode thread no earlier than the day before.

Sounds about right to me, unless people start a pre discussion thread and make it clear in the title that is what it is.

I think people should be able to start a thread when they like. Tying it in with the launch of the episode on the BBC Doctor Who website (midweek usually) seems appropriate.

I'm not sure the mods have set any rules for when people can start a thread - I think this is more to do with when certain members of the forum think a thread should begin.

Starting it weeks beforehand is madness, however.

Yeah, that's how we got around it last year.

Personally, it's no biggie - as long as I know which thread I'm supposed to get the poll organised for. (And I hope this week's poll isn't delayed this time.)

Agreed.

The number of voters does seem less compared to recent weeks - although I suppose the percentages will still be representative of how well the episode was received generally.

Lets hope everything will get back on track this week. Perhaps Slug can take into account what happened last week and the figures can be tweaked slightly to accommodate that.

Damned Radio 1 Newsbeat...

Spoiler
...they've just said that this double episode is the end of the line for Mickey, and that it's a great exit for him...

Don't know if people already knew that, but I didn't really want to know that ahead of the episode.

Well, looking at the Beeb pictures of "The Idiot's Lantern", Rose and the Doc have big cheesy grins (unless it's purely a publicity shot and they actually spend the whole episode crying), so I sincerely hope that
Spoiler
Mickey lives on in the parallel universe

I heard ages ago that

Spoiler
Mickey doesn't make it back from the parallel universe but his doppleganger does. and that maybe the Doctor and Rose don't realise they have an imposter on board

but also

Spoiler

The actor who plays Mickey has been talking about how his character builds over the whole season, so maybe he is left behind, rather than gets killed, and turns up to help save the day in the series finale.

Maybe.

I get the feeling Mickey is mistaken for Ricky before Ricky is aware of Mickey.

That is the theory I am working on too! Dramatically it would open up all kinds of possibilities.

If the mods request something of us, I don't see why it's necessary for us to challenge them for the sake of it.

And I didn't tell anybody what they should do, I just suggested that maybe it is a better idea not to make episode threads so early...I even gave valid reasons as well.
I could have been rude about it to the original poster, but I wasn't. I acknowledged that this is the main episode thread.
This very thread dropped to page two, so I was doing the thread poster a favour by retrieving his thread for him. This is one of the reasons I gave to suggest that episode threads don't be started up too early.

People do forum searches to read about old episodes. The last thing they want is half a dozen threads popping up in a forum search with the same title.

It just makes life so much easier if there is just one thread
for each episode.
And if any other threads are started it is made clear in the title that they aren't the main thread, and are just for pre-discussion.
There actually is a rule(albeit more of a request) to not post duplicate threads, but I've seen this happen quite regularly with episodes. One guy got his own episode thread bumped down by somebody else who wanted to be the one to start the main thread and didn't check to look.

I've seen episode threads turn up with very vague titles where you can't tell if it is the proper epsidoe thread or not.

All I'm really bothered about is having an episode thread that adopts the titling convention which has developed that is clear, concise, and consistent with all other episode threads so we know precisely what it is.....(Doctor Who -<Name of Epsiode>(Date)).

I don't even see why there's a need for a race to be the first one to start the episode thread.

Den,....they certainly are....MUCH less.

The thread itself had a massive response of over 800 replies. That's one of the longest threads easily.
But 'The Girl in the Fireplace' has polled the third lowest amount of votes.
'The End of the World' and 'Aliens of London' are the only two episodes whose polls have less voters responding on them.

And even the percentages have probably been affected, as another poster pointed out, other episodes got an initial boost that was reflected in the poll, which meant that there were a lot of votes for 'excellent' and 'very good'.
'School Reunion' got an initial 60% combination of 'excellent' and 'very good' which levelled off to around 56% as the episode was less fresh in the memory.

'The Girl in the Fireplace' didn't have the luxury of that same initial momentum.

I think that due to the actual number of posts in the thread, and the third lowest amont of actual votes, we can say that many people answered in the thread, but as there was no poll to use, they didn't come back to vote a day or two later because it wasn't fresh in their memory anymore.

I wonder if it's an good idea to ask the mods to extend the deadline on the TGITF poll until Sunday night?

It might not undo all the damage, but hopefully people logging on after ROTC will notice there's a TGITF poll now and have a vote.

I was concerned that there's a limit on the number of polls in a forum, but I mentioned this to the mods earlier in the week and apparently there isn't.

Great idea Slug! People can have the opportunity to vote in both polls and hopefully comment on the respective episodes at the same time.

Have you asked the Mods?

Just done so. That poll is closed now. If it doesn't re-open later, maybe someone else can also ask?
