Your phone has been badly flashed and/or it has been reported
stolen and the service provider has blocked it, have you phoned
up vodafone to inform them you have it back ?

Yes and they said it was now unblocked.

Anyone who unblocks (as opposed to unlocks) a phone, or even just posseses the necessary equipment with the intent to do so, is liable to upto 5 years in clink, hence why your phone is still blocked.

Do the right thing and hand in your lost or stolen phone to the local police station and go and buy yourself a new one

The full story is that its my friend's phone that her boyfriend got on contract for her but when they split up he spitefully reported it stolen. Then he regretted it and asked Vodafone to unblock it which they said they have done but as I said, it comes up 'Limited Service'.

you mean it works on voda but not other n/works?
if so either the sim is unregistered/blocked or the phone has still not been unblocked by the other networks

So who's name is the phone now in and who's paying the monthly rental?

Why did you take it to someone with the intention of unblocking it?

He's still paying the line rental and has taken the sim card off her which is why she wanted to use an o2 sim card in it. He agreed to her keeping the phone as it had been a birthday present. We took it to be unlocked as he told us it had been unblocked

Check the good advice given by ram33 above.

Whatever the outcome, you'll need to get your friend to speak with her (ex-)boyfriend to call Vodafone and explain that the phone is still blocked. He, together with Vodafone, are the only people who can help. There is no other legal remedy.
