Actually, the FA Cup Final drew 11.3m and Doctor Who only drew 8.4m so more people wanted to see the FA Cup Final.
Discussion of the match is as much a part of the even as the game itself. It was only 20 minutes for heaven's sake - it's not like anything was cancelled.
(And for the record, I'm a fan of football and Doctor Who.)”
Absolutely.
As with viewing figures, it is also interesting that traditionally when the FA Cup Final is on, the streets are relatively clear of people.
One thing else to mention for the non-football lovers; a big game like this has to be watched live. It is all part of the experience.
Who remembers the episode of
Whatever Happened To The Likely Lads? When Bob and Terry have to avoid hearing what the score was before the game is shown on televison?
In 1993, I went to see Paul Merton's live tour in my (then) local theatre. It was the same night that England were playing the last of the USA '94 qualification games against Poland and had to win to qualify. Merton made a few jokes about it, but didn't give away the score. Afterwards, my Dad and I walked home intending to watch the game that I had taped and we only passed two people on that journey - and they were talking about the result!

Interesting that there are also complaints about the Eurovision song contest; both the FA Cup Final and Eurovision, whether you like them or not, are traditions that have gone on for far longer than Doctor Who has.

Sometimes though, these things just happen. Bare in mind that on many occasions, the Eurovision Song contest could have postponed the next episode of Doctor Who. At least we don't have to wait two weeks for the next episode.
