Would depend if your land is of any use to the operators.

They pay around £6000 per year, per mast. I know a farmer who lives near the M6 motorway and he has 5 masts on his land.

They dont buy land, they lease the space from the land owner. If the area is very sparsley populated and there are no major roads, they wont be interested.

Thats as may be, but the land they use to locate base stations on are not choosen willy nilly. They are choosen to provide maximum signal strength in surrounding areas and to cover as many people are possible. Thus low lands, or lowly populated areas are not going to be of much use.
