Mariah Carey's voice
Is it just me or does it sometimes sound as though Mariah's voice may be deteriorating due to over-use. Generally when I listen to some of her music from just a few years ago, compared to now it sounds almost like a different person. don't get me wrong I do not hate her at all...

Didn't you noticed that from the 1999 album "Rainbow" and onwards? I dunno about you but her last album had some songs on it as good as whats on "Butterfly" from 1997.
She'll never be as good as was on her first 4 albums, I think she even knows that herself hence all the low-voiced songs she's done on her last 4 albums. |

Mariahs voice was at it's best in 1996, 10 years later when she tried to sing the end bit of We Belong Together at the Grammies she sounded like she had smoked 400 ciggies.

Quite a shame really that she's only had one number 1 single as a solo-artist.

I have never seen her live so cannot really judge what she is like performing her old hits - but definately her voice is far more hussy than it used to be.
I think it might be her "new RnB based style" as opposed to her not being capable anymore. Perhaps it might be a good idea for an old style single - just to see if she can. Sorry, I really don't like this hissing voice she sings with now. |

She recieved a huge amount of criticism about using her "whispering voice" for the past few albums before The Emancipation.
Thats why on The Emancipation she really tries to belt the tunes out like she did instead of whispering like she did on Charmbracelet/Glitter. People were saying "oh she has lost her voice" but like Johnny English said: if you listen to her latest album its quite similar to butterfly. *hears 'babydoll' in head* |

I think she has an amazing voice - i have seen her in concert twice - the last time being 2003 and she has a truely incredible voice.
I think her voice has changed over time but it has matured and is still truely amazing. |

When she sings live she makes her CDs sound muffled, which can't be said of a lot of artists these days. Of course her voice has changed over time as has her style but there is no doubt (IMO) that it is as strong it ever was! |

From Wikipedia:
Carey can cover all the notes from the alto vocal range leading to those of a coloratura soprano,[54] and her vocal trademark is her ability to sing in the whistle register. She has cited Minnie Riperton as the greatest influence on her singing technique, and from a very early age, she would attempt to emulate Riperton's high notes, to increasing degrees of success as her vocal range expanded. According to most sources, she has a five-octave vocal range, though some credit her with as many as eight octaves.[51] In 2003 her voice was voted the greatest in music in MTV and Blender magazine's countdown of the 22 Greatest Voices in Music. Carey said of the poll: "What it really means is voice of the MTV generation. Of course, it's an enormous compliment, but I don't feel that way about myself."[55] Carey's voice has come under considerable scrutiny from critics who believe that she does not effectively communicate the message of her songs. Rolling Stone magazine said in 1992, "Carey has a remarkable vocal gift, but to date, unfortunately, her singing has been far more impressive than expressive ... at full speed her range is so superhuman that each excessive note erodes the believability of the lyric she is singing."[56] The New York Daily News wrote that Carey's singing "is ultimately what does her in. For Carey, vocalizing is all about the performance, not the emotions that inspired it ... Does having a great voice automatically make you a great singer? Hardly."[54] Some interpreted Carey's decision to utilise what she described as "breathy" vocals in some of her late 1990s and early 2000s work as a sign that her voice had begun to deteriorate, but she has maintained that it "has been here all along".[57] An article in Vibe magazine indicated that Carey's singing style highlights weaknesses in other aspects of her music: "The impressiveness of her voice—as well as her tendency to oversing—make the blandness of her material all the more flagrant".[4] |

I only have the albums 'The Emancipation of Mimi', 'Charmbracelet' and 'Glitter' (working my way backwards) so only heard the singles from her first albums. However, I think that her voice is amazing and I would say it hasn't got any worse at all! On her latest album the songs 'Mine Again' and 'Stay The Night' prove this IMO.
If she chooses to sing in a lower voice, then it is to do with the types of song she is now singing. A lower voice suits them better. Can you imagine 'We Belong Together' an octave higher?? |

Some of the worlds biggest acts have had very few number one's, Elton John, Rod Stewart, Pink Floyd, Van Morrison etc. It's album sales that really count these days. As for being the greatest female vocalist ever, that could be argueable. She could probably hit a pitch that could open a remote controlled garage door, but others could contest her on her 'greatness'. |
