A very useful post that really adds something ....

“Next week will be trickier for the doctor....ITV have the Princes trust 30th birthday bash. Hosted by Ant and Dec it's likely to knock the audience a bit.”

Although with the ever-popular Eurovision, many people are likely to switch on to the BBC early on and stay there, so maybe Dumb & Dumber on ITV won't be that effective.

Blake's 7 was on the BBC so I don't think ITV would be able to get their hands on it - and anyway it's already rumoured to be coming back.

Sky have already got there with the Prisoner, so that just leaves Space 1999. And they would need a name change if that came back.

I'm glad I was wrong, but at the same time I feel a bit sad that decent programmes are sometimes set up to Slug it out with each other so one or both have to suffer. That's life in TV land I suppose.

Looking at the details briefly in the OG forum, it looks like the average may be even higher. Will the time-shift figures be affected by people missing the last 20 minutes of their recording?”

I couldn't agree more.

Thanks for the figures, guys. Very impressive. It'll be interesting to see how many tune in for part two.

I really enjoyed The Tripods as a kid. Was it a BBC programme?

Cheers Kenny, I thought it was.

Looks like itv will have to stick with reviving Sapphire and Steel - not that I'm complaining, I loved it.

Let's hope they make a good job of it and do the programme justice.

Space 2099?

I'd love to see Blakes 7 come back mind you. I must admit I'd prefer it on the BBC, but franchises have crossed channels before, e.g. Auf Wedersein Pet and This Is Your Life.

To be fair i don't think that X-Men is all that bad a film, it's just that most people who were likely to enjoy that kind of film would already have seen it.

I think that The X Men is a very good film.
I don't think that the ratings in anyway undermine that fact.

I believe that the ratings for The X Men are the same ratings that ITV got for it last time.

Ratings aren't everything, and don't necessarily reflect quality.

I think that in the last quarter of an hour of the previous episodes of Doctor Who, the ratings had increased slightly, possibly due to people tuning in for the Lottery which follows....

...but this is the first episode of Doctor Who to my knowledge that has lost viewers in the final 15 minutes.
'Rise of the Cybermen' lost approximately half a million viewers in the final 15 minutes.

And that final 15 mins figure had nothing to do with DW running 20 mins late? Seems a bit of a coincidence, especially when only a representative sample of viewers is polled, so maybe there is some other statistical event at work (perhaps factoring in the fact that some vcr/pvr recordings would end early)?

Are you sure about that?

When I looked at the ratings thread over at OG on Sunday it seemed clear that DW had actually gained viewers in that period.

ITV taking a good film like the X Men and putting it up against a good programme like Doctor Who is the equivilant of ;

ITV : (cocks a gun and points it at the X Men )Put the ratings down, or the film dies.

X-MEN - Don't listen to them! Carry on! Make those ratings fly!

ITV : Shut up, you...

BBC : NEVER! (airs Doctor Who )

ITV : You asked for it...

BANG!!!

Edit - WOOT! 300th Post

Yes, I'm pretty sure. Somebody called 'Marcus' posted a graph that showed the viewers drop from between 400 000 and 500 000 in the final 15 minutes.

Here's the ratings from the OG thread in 5 minute chunks, courtesy of andyparish:

(REVISED) including the 20:05-20:10 timeslot. Doctor Who at (19:23 - 20:09) - 8.64m (40.1% share)

5 Minute Breakdown,

19:10....7.31m
19:15....7.47m

19:20....7.61m
19:25....7.82m
19:30....8.04m
19:35....8.06m
19:40....8.59m
19:45....8.80m
19:50....8.99m
19:55....9.25m
20:00....9.63m
20:05....9.65m

20:10....6.51m
20:15....6.46m

There's a graph which shows an apparent dip right at the end, maybe people switching off/over in fear of a 'coming next', but there's certainly no half-million dip to worry yourself about!

Well according to the stats that 'The Slug' just posted above,..it peaked at 9.65 million at 8.05 pm,....and dropped to 6.45 million at 8.15pm.

So it appears that the drop was even more.

500,000 is quite alot of people to be honest although i dont think the BBC need to be worred. It might just be people headed down the pub or went to cook food or something and decided to set the VCR or decide to catch the repeat (what are the Dr Who on BBC3 ratings like?)

also on the subject of BBC vs ITV on Saturdays nights i have to say if ITV put X-Factor up against Dr Who and lose then it could seriously damage X-Factors ratings come the following season as the media is gonna report it as a show thats had its time. Although i havnt watched ITV in about 4yrs but i catch AmericanIdol and Quizmania on ITV2 usually

ITV is not going to beat Dr.Who unless the BBC mess up Doctor Who in some way like move TIMES !! "cough cough" or days even. If they keep each show fresh and a new story for each show thats gripping like they have been doing then BBC will stay at the top of Saturday nights. I also think the BBC need to make more Dr Who cause 13 episodes dosn't seem enough lol. I suggest a minimum of 20 episodes which is 4months of Dr.Who and 6months of filming (longer if they start filming while previous season is airing)

Oops my mistake, I forgot that it is on for 45 minutes and not an hour.

But I did read on that thread on OG that viewers dropped by around 400 000 in the last 5 minutes or something.

IIRC the 5 minute stats are the average for the five minutes starting at that time, so average 9.65m between 2005 and 2010, and average 6.51 between 2010 and 2015, and apparently DW finished at 2009.

If that's all correct, no need to panic yet
