Hello there

Being a complete novice with DVD's and DVD players, I thought I would come to one of the best forums on the internet for advice!

I have so far identified this DVD player:

http://www.pioneer-eur.com/eur/prod...xonomy_id=62;84

And wanted to ask if everyone thought it was a good DVD player. What I'm after is are the features good?

If possible, I'd also like advice on which speakers to get, as I'd like to have surround sound in my living room.

Lastly, I have seen this DVD player for sale at www.askdirect.co.uk

http://www.askdirect.co.uk/uview?ca...1695&topcatid=1

for £139.00 inc. VAT and delivery. Is this a good price, or can a better price be found? Does anyone have any experience of buying stuff from askdirect, if so what are they like? What are delivery times like etc.

Thanks in advance - any help given will go a long way towards helping me decide on my first DVD purchase.

Some basics to consider. Might be worth figuring these out first.

1. Without a serious TV and audio setup, you'll probably be hard pressed to tell the difference between DVD players - they tend to start at excellent and work up, although build quality might be an issue.

2. Your basic options are PC, free with a PS2/X-brick console, supermarket cheapie, all-in-one home-cinema-in-a-box type package, or dedicated player. Depends what you need / how often you will use / what other kit you have.

3. Do you want region 2 or a multi-region player (you can usually find popular models pre-hacked from specialist stores), else a lot of the cheapo players can be handset-hacked.

4. Sockets - make sure there are RGB scart and/or s-video outputs, and optical and coax outputs for dolby digital and DTS.

5. How much do you want to spend (on the player and the whole system)? You mostly get what you pay for.

6. Sound is a separate issue, remember you need an amp and speakers. And they need to work in your room and with the other kit.

7. GET A DEMO. Especially when buying surround sound stuff.

8. Get it setup correctly for 4:3 letterbox vs 16:9 screen output, and digital vs analogue audio, so it works with your other kit.

I've just purchased my first dvd player. A multi region Pioneer 350 and I couldn't be happier with it.
I got it from http://www.avland.co.uk for £130 inc del.
It arrived less than 24 hours later (paid by credit card). It connects to the tv with scart and to my home cinema amp with phono leads. Looks and sounds great. It's also RCE compatible.
I was going to get one from AskDirect but they didn't have a silver one and it was £10 more.

Hope that helps
