Next product...

Just wondered if anyone knew when we might see the next product from Topfield?

The reason I ask is their website now has a TF6000PVR, a satelite PVR that support WLAN. Personally I just want digital terrestrial Freeview style..... but want it networked so I can pull stuff off it as there is no PC anywhere near it, and the USB bridge method seems klunky and hard work.

So what do people think - is this something we'll be seeing soon over here?

As I've said before, if we do see a 6800 - an equivalent UK terrestrial version of the 6000 - then it'll be nearer the end of the year than the beginning.

I have heard absolutely no rumours about an impending launch of even a terrestrial version of the 6000, let alone a UK specific one.

<<<< Yep. TF6000PVR! W-Fi: magic.

But Nigel is quite right. This is just a beta satellite version that I am testing for Turbosat.

I guess the wi-fi just lets you pull recordings off and pop TAPs and music on ??

Do you know if they'll be providing an API for doing an HTTP request etc ?

I've got an Asus on the back of the 5800 - would I be right in expecting that, apart from quicker transfer, a future 6800 wouldn't be as flexible. i.e. since the asus is actually a small linux pc you can use perl, php etc very easily.

Guess thats where your reelBox comes into its own with best of both worlds, wi-fi plus unix ?

From what I've read about the 6000, they've just added an off the shelf wi-fi and http server module. There's a web interface for setting timers, viewing directories, and downloading files. I doubt it's possible to pass additional requests directly to TAPs; no new API has been published and the current one doesn't work properly over USB.

How's the transfer speed, Rhubarbe?

Yes, it also lets you set recordings over the wifi from your laptop. I doubt it (http request).

If you have an Asus and do a lot with it, as you say, I think that'll remain more flexible. In theory somebody should be able to write a TCC (like DCC, RCC, TDCC) but without the API.....

I'm expecting a DVB-T card for my ReelBox; the TX list has been written and a UK T and S channellist is only days away so, when I get it installed, I hope to be able to achieve DVB-T and DVB-S on one box with full ethernet. It won't have MHEG yet, I believe that it is being developed but my wife has her Toppy for that so I'm not really too bothered.

It let's you load TAPs but I don't know about passing requests to them. Only TAP I put on it so far is JAGs which crashed the box. This box is a bit like my wife's cat: best when it's asleep. I love the proper component video output though.

Transfer speed about the same as the 5800, no faster. Turbo off mode though you can just set it and forget it. For me, the ability to transfer over the wifi to my laptop makes it a worthwhile purchase. For the many that have gone Puppy and Asus, I don't know, maybe hang on of rthe HD version with HDMI. I think that VLC might work too.

I am currently negotoiating getting an EPG to work for it (it's a satellite version and there is only a now and next EPG). Nigel has been very helpful but I am just too thick.

It's a gorgeous looking box though, and only 60mm high. I'd have a 6800PVR but it needs a lot of work on this one yet.

MHEG yeah very useful for the weather - but then so is the PC.

.......guess it might be useful around world cup time to choose from different games but they're just on other channels really, 301 etc.

So MHEG, lets face it, if you've basically got a PC under your telly you aren't gonna use MHEG are you ?

I wonder how many people will complain that it's not at the full 56MB/s as specified by the wireless standard

Well, if it comes to that, how close to 100Mbit/s do you get with 802.3u 100Base-TX/FX standard? I get about 20Mbit/s at work un UTP.

I'll have to try that one on the next person that complains they don't get 480Mb/s out of their USB!
