Hi there

I'm thinking of buying a DVD player in the near future and would like some advice on where to buy it from.

The thing is, you see, that I have had several bad experiences of buying stuff off the internet that haven't worked and then found it near impossible to return the goods etc (jungle.com, dabs.com etc), as they say I have opened the product

So, what I would like from you please are some reputable companies that have good prices, good pre and post sales service and basically companies that you are happy to recommend to other people without hesitation.

Thanks in advance

I have just bought a combined DVD/VCR from Makro (£199 ex VAT) - It's a JVC and I have been impressed with the quality of it.

I have bought from Makro in the past and once got a faulty drill - they changed it over no problem and I have usually found their staff to be friendly and helpful.

Makro can be great value.
I bought a Aiwa ZL 500 hifi there for less than the price of the ZL 100. Also bought a printer and scanner well below the price on the high street.

I have bought two DVD players from Richer Sounds web site. Good price and did what it said on the box. I have bought most of my stuff from this company (albeit from the shops) but the two DVD players were purchased from thier web site.

With Makro you also have 28 days to return goods for any reason on top of normal warranties etc)
- no questions asked
choice is limited, and you have to be a 'member' ( why) but otherwise ok

Isn't there something called the 'distance buying' regulations that gives you something like 7 days to return goods purchased in such a way, even if they are not faulty !

Edit : Yes there is
look here

Wait : theres more ....

"The key features of the regulations are:

you must give consumers clear information including details of the goods or services offered, delivery arrangements and payment, the supplier's details and the consumer's cancellation right before they buy (known as prior information)
you must also provide this information in writing
the consumer has a cooling-off period of seven working days ."

For something like a DVD player, best going into an actual real live shop if you can (unless geography is a problem, or slight price savings are a high priority). Depends on what you're after as well, and whether you know exactly what model/price range you want or are still trying to figure that one out.

I'd always recommend checking out the local independent specialist-type shops (tend to buy all my stuff from Sevenoaks), rather than some big faceless make-buying-decision-based-on-what-the-box-looks-like outfit like Comet. Purely for the demos and proper advice and any after-sales care you need and the fact that they sell toys not insurance...

Richer Sounds (richersounds.com) is my recommendation. You don't have to buy over the internet, you can pop into one of there shops if you have one nearby. I have always found them veryfriendly and accommodating. But the big plus fo me is the deals they have on. It's usually UK stock they hold and the delas are on top name stuff. For example, I think there's an excellent deal at the moment on the Toshiba SD120 DVD Player. As far as I can remember, they're selling it for under £80.
