An unmodified Toshiba DVD player will not play a R1 disk so you would be wasting your money although I do believe it can be chipped.

Personally I would keep the R1 disk and sell the Toshiba

Unless you actually bought your machine pre-chipped from a specialist shop, or had it chipped, then assume it's region 2 only. Chipping will probably cost you about 50 quid. Best borrowing from a mate's collection first, if you can, to test how your player handles R1 discs.

No shop will take back a disc for region coding incompatibilities, and anyway, with the return post you'd be better using the disc as a frisbee...

Those discs are of Region 0 as they are DVDR (ie the public cant set the region of discs like the big movie studios can).

As you state it says Region 1 and NTSC on the back cover but that is because it has been made up using the back of a genuine R1 cover and manipulated to suit the film that you have bought.

So as they are R0 then you still cant determine whether or not your machine is set for multiregion or not.

Well i recieved the disc this morning (i must say very fast and prompt dilivery) put it in...
...And to no suprise the dvd player says 'Disc error, Uauthorised disc, Unable to play disc etc...) so I take it the player is not multi region!!

If i take the disc to someone could they burn the contents to a dvdr and would it play it then, as i own the rights to make backup copies for personal use?

Thankyou,

Well it pretty much depends on the disk

Either could have more extras, a DTS soundtrack, different cuts due to the country's censorships.

Also an R1 disk will play at the correct speed, where as an R2 will play approx 4% faster due to the fps conversion and sound can appear a semitone higher.
An R1 has slightly less line resolution due to the NTSC sytstem and may appear 'juddery' due to the 3/2 pulldown.

Me, I prefer R2. Can't say I notice the speed increase but do notice the 3/2 pulldown on R1s and higher pic quality on R2s.
Also some useful features on my DVD player become disabled when playing R1s, not to mention the fact that the money I spend is going back into the 'R2 Industry' rather than the across the pond!
