You're in luck, I used to collect those TV theme albums. Think the original is the best still.

I love Peter Howell's Season 18 Title Music.

A kick up the a*s for the series in 1980.

All the version UNTIL Murray Gold's were just rubbish.

The 1996 TV movie theme was rather impressive and seems to have influenced the current version.

I wasn't too keen on the movie version. For me, it was far too bombastic and sounded like the opening to a gung-ho, army themed film rather then the spooky, somewhat ethereal sound the theme traditionally had.

I totally agree with you. It sounds far too American. I do not like the influence it has had over the current version either. In my opinion what we have at the moment is neither one thing nor the other, ie elements from old and not so old.
I would have liked a reworking of the original that was closer to the original.
