Question for Jason / Bex Tech etc..
Morning! Me again
i thought i had better start a new thread rather than continuing on the skype one as this has nothing to do with skype. OK - so to recap I have friends in spain on a LL they are getting BB via a sat link so will try Voip to Sat Voip when they get it and see what happens. In the meantime as a new user of Voip looking to dip his toes into the water I downloaded VoipCheap as they offer 300mins per week free calls to Spainish LL, tried it last night and it worked fine. At this stage I should point out that it isn't 100% free - if you want to have a long uniterupted conversation you need credit in your account otherwise you get cut off after a few minutes. The min credit you must have seems to be 10Euros, the credit doesn't get used up while you are on the phone but it is only valid for 90 days and then I guess if you want to keep using the service you have to spend another 10Euros - in essence I am getting 300 mins of calls to Spain per week for about £6 per quarter which is a lot better than before! Ok - so the next thing is I want things to be as easy as possible, turning on the laptop & speaking via a mic etc is not ideal, it seems that I can connect my dect phone via an adaptor to the PC - so this gives me the freedom to be able to walk around etc whilst making the calls but still means I have to connect it up to the laptop etc before using it. I have found this http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/SIP-Phone-Adap...QQcmdZViewItem on ebay, I am right in assuming that this can be plugged into my wireless router? I then configure the wireless router so as long as its on I should be able to make sip calls via my house phone without needing to turn my pc on?? If this is the case does this: http://www.voipcheap.com/en/sip.html indicate that i could continue using VoipCheap or do I need another provider? Hope you don't mind me picking your brains - I mentioned Jason & Bex as they were so helpful before but I'm interested to hear want anyone thinks Cheers Spiv

www.voipstunt.com offer free calls to landlines in Spain too, the credit with VoIP Stunt lasts 120 days, if you top up within the 120 days you get to keep the previous unused credit.
That device can be plugged into the wired half of the router and allow you to make and receive calls without the PC on. |

Indeed not - my first dip-of-toe was to get a USB handset as proof of concept more than anything. That was many moons ago and more recently I got a Tesco USB phone to use with a softphone (I got it for free - scanned for wrong price, Tesco price pledge etc) which is now in my laptop bag for when I'm travelling..... On my desk I have a "skip rescue" Cisco 7960 hardphone though - which is what I use 99% of the time.Quote:

As long as the device is SIP compliant and hasn't been locked like some BT VOIP devices and routers are - then it ought to be possible to use more or less any SIP provider (and switch them as and when you feel the need)Quote:

![]() ![]() Good idea re using credit up on 0870 etc. Ok one last question then I think.. will I still be able to get normal incoming calls to my landline with the phone plugged into the adaptor or will I need to unplug the phone from the adaptor when I am not using it? Cheers Spiv |

Some people had managed to buy the PAP2 from dabs for around twenty-something pound, the not locked to vonage version.
Broadbandbuyer and Broadbandstuff are two other suppliers. The PAP2 has two VoIP lines, no PSTN line. That was fine for me as I don't have a landline. |
