After seeing this apparantly very reasonably priced multi-region on jungle - and then reading a forum post (i've forgotten where) that states it should be avoided at all costs - does anybody own one or know anything about it in terms of crapness?

I am currently on my FOURTH one of these little gems.

The FIRST one I had was incorrectly assembled and started with the subtitle feature switched to the first option (normally English) - irritating as hell.

My SECOND had a faulty PSU that died after a few days

My THIRD had a bad ground connection on the LCD panel, and as the tray opens/closes the display flickers

and my current, the FOURTH... Well apart from the fact the select button on the remote is shafted, I was watching "The Drunken Master" last night and the whole unit vibrated it's tits off LOUDLY at for around 15 or 20 minutes.

So, if it does it again, it's going back. Fifth time lucky, eh?

On a similar note, SCAN (www.scan.co.uk) make the SCAN SC-2000 which is effectively the SAME dvd player (same components exactly, with one or two SMALL differences) at the same price, and after having bought TWO of them for two different people I have had NO problems with either of them.

It seems that these cheap no name DVDs are likely to suffer much more than a branded one (generally).. also you might find some discs wont play, especially the ones that have the extra features like on the Matrix etc. Although even the big brands can suffer like this.

You'd think the cheap no-namers would suffer and be really shit players, but the SCAN SC-2000 and most of the players based on the same "kit" (for want of a better word) are actually really good. I mean for £150 + vat you get a DVD player that plays all regions, plays VCDs (V1-V3), SVCDs, CDRs, MP3 CDs, CDRWs... and in the case of the Logix/Azuda 3000 removes macrovision.
It has DTS out and loads more. It's not that it's cheap and nasty or anything - it pisses all over the BUSH models and stuff in the same price range. I just lucked out and bought gear from Ultravideo that has yet to be 100% satisfactory (Probably gonna be on DVD #5 if this one makes that vibrating noise again).

Buy from scan - http://www.scan.co.uk. They've updated the chipset they use, it's a good player. I've bought two as gifts for people and they work no problems. For that price you won't be disappointed.
