Well I went and did it - signed up for a CPS service - it's unimportant which one because whomever it is, BT would still send the "anti-slamming" letter.....

They got the BT account number correct, and the phone number to be CPSed correct.....

They then managed to get my address and my name incorrect (at least incorrect compared to the BT bill that arrives with monotonous regularity).

How do they do it ?

Interesting.

It takes real skill to get the wrong name and address from a computer record keyed on an account number.

Indeed - and also provides no protection against slamming either if the letter never arrived because it was sent to the wrong address.

Well have you not considered:

NTL or Telewest?

That is no CPS service and you get your Digital TV,Telephone and internet service in one bill down there own network.

Telewest has an offer for TV,internet and phone for just £30 per month with Free weekend calls to landlines with the Talk Weekends telephone package which is included with the £30 monthly charge.

Whats more:

They still offer:

Free voicemail
Free 1471 caller return service.
Service garuntee
Discounted installation

Furthermore, Telewest customer service is a lot better than BT's (By phone and by email).

Join NTL/Telewest:

NTL: 0500-500-500
Telewest: 0800-073-0551

www.telewest.co.uk

Or alternatively, if its just internet and phone your after, why not consider Bulldog Broadband from Cable and Wireless? They take over your BT line and send only one bill which includes line rental and calling features. If you don't already have a BT line, they can install one for as little as £1!

Nope - nearest cable franchise to me is >50 miles away. Anyway - I've been a victim of Telewaste in the past. Never again.

Well have you tried Tesco homephone and Tesco Broadband?

Its recently been awarded one of the best services and runs down a BT line and isn't a LLU.

Tesco homephone and internet services are run by Tesco and Cable and Wireless visit www.tesco.com for more details.

Why would I ? I'm quite happy where I am.... the purpose of the original post was an observation on the ingenuity of BT's systems in creating cock ups.

So far in the last 12 months, BT have given me more in entertainment than one should expect from a phone company. Oh and a tidy pile of compensation for their cockups.

I've had no problems with BT - billing is fine, call charges are reasonable (I am not going to turn into a penny-pinching money saver), it's 99% reliable, etc.

My ADSL (which runs over the BT wholesale network before reaching my ISP) has had 30mins downtime in coming up to a year.

One thing that could be improved is customer service.
