ok - what am I missing here?

How this reminds of the *good news / bad news* from *The Office....

The bad news is....

*I'm afraid we're going to have to let you go...*

The good news is...

*Robbie - you're rich beyond your wildest dreams!*

Now of course, in business you have to speculate to accumulate and all that, and yes, of course there's more too it, but even so, however the ins and outs work....£80m to someone who already must be rich enough not to actually need any more money anyway just seems ludicrous, especially in light of the previously reported job losses.

Record companies going down the toilet because of music downloads my arse.

For me it's not so much the money as the 'man'.

I saw a very brief biog of the 31 year old guy who's one of the Fame Academy wannabes the other day and he stated his ambition as "to play with Robbie Williams".

Now ... did I miss something.

OK ... he's had a couple of decent songs but *surely* he's not a musos' hero worship figure.

Is he???

I knoiw this is probably suicidal and I'll have to wear a tin hat and bullet-proof jacket for a while, but I'm feeling reckless today....so here goes....I've always thought this young fella to be highly over-rated! There! I've said it. Also, whenever I hear that droning 'Angels' song I feel nauseous.

Definitely over-rated.

Certainly, mate. We'll have to take turns popping our heads over the parapet to see when it's safe to venture out again. Hopefully he'll go back to America again soon and it'll all die down again.

I think it's called Market Forces, Record Companies are most certainly not charities so they will be expecting more than their pound of flesh from Robbie. I think they see him as an Artist with some longevity who appeals to the masses, if they are right or not time will only tell and they will also be watching very carefully to see what impact he makes in the US.

Also just because an Artist gets what seems to be a huge amount of money some of that will be an advance set off against future record sales and depending on what sort of contract they have made the Record Company will usually find ways of clawing back some of that amount eg. Touring Expenses, Video's, Production Costs etc.

Robbie's not really to my taste but Good Luck to him!

Aren't EMI the same company that gave that big advance to Miraha Carey - only to get rid of her a while later?

yes - I'd quite happily be sacked if if they gave me $38,000,000 - yet strangely it doesn't seem to work like that in the glamorous world of cartography.

and yes, I appreciate all the business type reasons it can, and even needs to be done, I just think it must be really be rubbing salt into the wounds of the 1,800 people made redundant not so long ago by the same company (who are also whingeing about slumps in cd, putting the entire blame on napster/p2p software, and not even considering the effects of competition from dvd/computer games, which coincidentally have had increased sales matching the decreased sales of cds)

Ho hum....

Robbie Williams Sucks. I tend ot to like Pop Music at all, but can sometimes understand why people might like it....but I just cant understand why people like him. He comes acroos way to cocky too....

The only reason Robbie is good now is because of Guy Chambers. Before Angels came out Robbie's solo career was stalling.

Now, Guy might be going elsewhere, EMI could have another Mariah on their hands
