Im a big David Tennant fan and have been for years. I think his acting is great and he's very talented. And also just a little bit attractive...

However.....does anyone else cringe a little at his accent in Dr Who?

Just sometimes....not all the time, for the most its great, but just little things he says...like when when he said "Mickey we've got POWA" ...It was similar to the one in Cassanova.

I can't see why he's not using his normal Scottish accent; CE used his normal accent so what's the idea? Silly.

And if he did use his Scottish accent , id love him more, being that im from about 10 minutes down the road from him!

The more I keep watching Tennant, the more I see Kenneth Williams. What a carry on!

If you want to succeed in playing the Doctor, you need a certain amount of character strength on screen. For me, Tennant is lacking this. Prancing around and shouting like a sixteen year old teenager just doesn't cut it for me.

However, I would have preferred it if he had used his Scottish accent instead of this god awful cockney mock up!

Love both accents. The guy has such on screen charisma that he could speak in monkey grunts and I'd still want to watch him.

That's probably true. But I have other issues with Tennants performance. His accent is only a small part of him!

Whilst I disagree that SM was the worst (Paul McGann?) I do recall much consternation about his Scots burr. Therefore I don't mind the accent as such.


Besides which to quote Colin Baker when asked by an American fan whether the Doctor shouldn't have an English accent he replied "The Doctor has a Gallifreyan accent which sounds English to the untrained ear"

I read that he is not alowed to talk in his scottish accent on Dr Who if this is true it is reprehensibil and racist and a stepback to the early days of broadcasting when even english accents from the north where discriminated agenst

from what I remember of his accent, albeit from when we were kids, his accent is not that much different from the way he speaks in Dr Who.

He certainly always had a more refined accent and not really what you would call a strong Scots accent

Well, when he's interviewed he's a helluva lot more Scottish than in Who when he's well, not Scottish at all!

His performances in DW veer a little close to some of Basil Fawlty's rants for me.

I have a feeling that even CE may have suffered such discrimination. I for one didn't think the "even the universe has a North" line was that convincing. Dr Who had a South England accent when he started, and for most of his career, so it make sense he should keep it - I'm sure you lot from North of Watford would complain bitterly if Taggart suddenly sounded as if he came from Surrey!

No he doesn't, but if he changes his accent every regeneration then it just sounds stupid. This ridiculous regional jealousy is just that - ridiculous.

I don't hear you all complaining about all the other actors in other series changing their accents for various parts! That's what actors do - they are actors! Having said that, I suspect the Scotts would be the first up in arms if an English actor put on a Scottish accent to play a Scott (but obviously they don't mind Australians doing it! )

I guess if there was any justice, then Dr Who would have a Welsh accent, seeing as that's where it's filmed. Live with it.

With the greatest of respect, comparing Doctor Who and Taggart isn't sensible because there is no reason at all for a character in Taggart to change their accent.



No, I don't agree at all. Why is it any more ridiculous to have a different accent than a different face? I'm afraid your argument about regional jealousy falls flat with me because I was born in the South of England and still live there but I think it's fine for the Doctor's accent to change with each regeneration. The voice itself changes, so why not the accent?


I agree with that. I think true actors do tailor their voices to fit the part, but I have to admit that I would be happier seeing Tennant use, if not his own, then a different accent to the one he's settled on for the Doctor. It is very similar to the accent he used in Casanova (which worked perfectly in that role). Personally I'd rather he was using a Scottish accent or a well spoken Southern English accent. I thought for a while last week he was starting to 'posh up' but I must have imagined it.

I was told on another thread that the reason the Doctor speaks the way he does has been explained by the fact that Rose was the last person he heard speak before regenerating. I don't know if this is something that has always happened with regenerations or simply something that's been brought in to explain this one.
