There was supposedly a scene that never made it into The Christmas Invasion which explained that the newly regenerated Doctor picks up his accent from those around him.

Interestingly enough the 8th Doctor's latest companion is from "the North" (on the BBC7 Audio Stories), could she (Lucy Miller) have still been around when Doc#8 became Doc#9?

Of course if the above is true then the 8th Doctor should probably have an American accent

I find his normal accent difficult to understand at times and this is probably why he doesn't use it (not because I can't understand it but the majority of people would be the same I imagine)

The only thing that has erked me about his accent was in Army Of Ghosts when he's capturing one of the "Ghosts"

"C'MON YOUA BUUUUTAY!!!"
Bad David, don't over-act!

Agree with the statement above....Ten-inch...yeha, I don't care what accent he's doing...

I'd rather hear a Scot doing a fair English accent albeit a bit OTT rather than an English doing a very bad Scottish accent.

Though cringing in rare places, DT's Doctor accent has always represented his optimism.

When he was on Big Quiz of the Year Sharon Osbourne pointed out he had big shoes. He said his feet didn't take up all of them..

I really don't think the majority of people would find it hard to understand his normal accent. An accent is easy to adjust to, Matt Smith's occasional mumbling seems to be more of a problem with some people (thought some are fine with it). I might be wrong but I just can't see most people having a problem with a Scots accent, and if they do then perhaps that's more reason to have him use it and be glad Amy Pond uses hers since I find it quite saddening if the majority of people in the UK cannot as you are guessing understand a Scots accent, and I don't mean any offence to you with you finding it hard.)

Or do you mean his Scots accent in particular and not Scots in general?

Now, dont get me wrong here. At all.

Im a big David Tennant fan and have been for years. I think his acting is great and he's very talented. And also just a little bit attractive...

However.....does anyone else cringe a little at his accent in Dr Who?

Just sometimes....not all the time, for the most its great, but just little things he says...like when when he said "Mickey we've got POWA" ...It was similar to the one in Cassanova.

Im rambling. sorry.

maybe i shoudnt have had that wine with lunch.

omg she has no face.
I think he's incredible at accents, I've seem him do entirely different accents for only very small parts which he can't have had much time to spend practicing.. The instances you point out might be cringy to you but they're not bad or anything. "POWA" might be something that anyone with the Doctor's enthusiasm and kookiness might say at times.. It's not a mispronunciation is all I mean. He knows that's not the regular, mundane pronunciation for that accent.
