advice please !
i have a pioneer pdp-436sxe and a denon dvd-1920, and im using a qed hdmi-p cable. im extremly happy with the performance so far but when i was watching master and commander on dvd earlier i decided to see if there was a difference between 576p 720p and 1080i using the dvd player to upscale, and i cant notice any difference at all. im only an amateur, so i'd be gratefull if someone could point out what the major difference is when watching in 720p mode

What ever signal you feed your screen it will only display it at its native resolution which in your screens case is 768p.
The arguement is that the scaling chips in plasma screens etc arent that great and by upscaling the image in a decent DVD player will leave the screens own scaling less to do and therefore result in better picture quality. With my experience this is true and that with the denon DVD and pioneer screen you can achieve a better picture quality by allowing the denon to upscale the picture. You do however have to "tweak" the settings after changing the resolution. |

thanks for the reply. im still in the process of "running my plasma screen in" and it looks sensational with dvd's, so i cant imagine how good it will look when its been set up properly{when using a thx dvd for settings ect} so im better of using 720p mode on dvd player?

Try both - it is easier for a system to downscale than it is to upscale so there is an arguement that 1080i going down to 768 should be easier than a further amount of upscaling needed if using 720 but you then have the added complication of the screen having to de-interlace the picture.
A friend who owns the same combo does prefer it with a 1080i feed but I am not as convinced as she is. |

Exact number of lines is a bit of an odd one as in addition to the lines displayed on the screen there are others that arent (teletext is carried in these extra lines for example) different companies have different conventions on if they count displayed lines or all lines which I suspect is the variance in line numbers you are seeing.
