I `m iinterested in the 5800t as my first PVR but there doesn`t seem to be a PDC facility. How will I avoid missing the end of late starting programmes, which seems a frequent occurence?

"Nigel from Toppy" will probably give you chapter and verse on this when he sees your post but, basically, the Freeview EPG is not updated conscienciously enough at the moment by all the channels to enable this to happen in the same way as PDC is supposed to.

However, if you're just worried about the usual couple of minutes of overrun, then most of the TAP EPGs (MyStuff does, for example) allow you to set a 'padding' time so you can automatically add, say 2 minutes to the EPG times.

This can introduce some conflicts where they wouldn't normally happen but the next version of MyStuff should overcome these... Go to toppy.org.uk forums for discussion...

As Kenny says it is a limitation of the platform; all Freeview PVRs suffer in usabilty from the lack of better EPG data about programmes and programme changes. A Toppy with TAPs like MYStuff and an overnight EPG gatherer like eit2mei probably deals with the situation better than most.

Not quite. The DTT platform supports a PDC type functionality but none of the broadcasters choose to use it. Hence none of the box makers bother supporting it.

You are right of course; but did not want to complicate things too much and effectively it is a limitation being imposed on the platform at present; lets hope the actual potential is better exploited soon.

Hi,

Not only do the broadcasters not bother with the PDC type signals, they sometimes don't bother with a correct EPG!
The only requirement from Offcom is for them to broadcast a Now & Next.

The reply I got from Offcom, was along the lines of :

" The timeliness of the Now & Next is the responsibility of the Broadcaster. Also, there is no requirement to broadcast an EPG, nor do we envisage proposing a requirement for them to do so."

Our 'light touch' regulators don't want to force anyone to do anything!
