Pete waterman and nicking classical music
He reckons he used 'Pacelbels canon' as the inspiration to 'I should be so lucky'. so, I listened to this piece of music.(Pacelbels Canon) and what it sounded like to me was the Oasis song 'whatever', in fact the violins in this song are identical!. Its also the same chords used in the melody of 'Dont look back in anger'.
mind you , Oasis nicked 'whtaever' from Neil Innes as well .

And there I was thinking Oasis just stole from the Beatles!
"And laughed with all this friends At all the little men who borrow tunes They heard just Yesterday" Ocean Colour Scene - Better Day I often wonder if this line was written about Oasis? Haven't listened to Pacebells Canon yet but I intend to. Plagiarism is rife in music but if its done subtly you would hardly notice. The Pete Waterman interview was in the Telegraph yesterday made for intersting reading at any rate. |

There's nothing new about pop music "borrowing" from classical music - it's been going on since the 50s.
'Saturday Nite At The Duckpond" by The Cougars (Tchaikovsky's 'Swan Lake') , "Nut Rocker" by B Bumble and The Stingers (Tchaikovsky's 'The Nutcracker') and "Whiter Shade of Pale" by Procol Harum (JS Bach 'Air on A G String') are three that come immediately to mind. Pachelbel's Canon was also used by The Farm on "Altogether Now". My least favourite adaptation has to be the 1970s hit "If I Had Words" by Scott Fitzgerald and Yvonne Keeley, which uses the melody line from the final Movement of Camille Saint-Saens Organ Symphony. The first few minutes of that work - especially when the organ and brass come crashing-in with that thunderous chord about 1'05" after the start - is just breathtaking and ranks among my all-time-best musical moments. Turning it into a twee pop song was nothing short of sacreligious!!! |

Nothing new. The Beatles were influenced by Buddy Holly in there early years. They then went on to be influenced by Dylan in the mid sixties. Later it was Karlheinz Stockhausen who influenced them. This can heard on the last track of Revolver, (Tomorrow never knows), and Sgt Pepper, Magical Mystery Tour, and the Yellow Submarine soundtrack. We wouldn't consider their work wasn't original, as they only based their work on those people. They were influenced but that doesn't mean they copied.
Oasis are considered by many to be copies of the Beatles. I don't feel this is so. The structure of Oasis songs is much different to Lennon-McCartney compositions. Try playing them on a guitar and you'll see what I mean. The only similarity between the Beatles and Oasis is the way the vocals sometimes sound a little like John. |

But they dont SOUND like the beatles or anyone else, they SOUND like Oasis...so I agree with you.I mean, Status Quo copied all chuck berries licks, but they dont sound like chuck berry, they sound like status quo. ![]() Mind you the opening to 'imagine' (piano riff) was inspired by The piano at the start of 'let it be'. (alternating 3rd5th(together) and tonic, with the tonic on the off beat..ie start the riff on the 3rd5th.) John put that little transitional embellisment in the chord which makes 'Imagine' so recognisable. |

..and is it just me, or does the start of *Little by Little* sound uncannily like Pink Floyd.....
