I have recently purchased a 42" Plasma made by Samsung. The TV is NOT HD ready.

When I first switch the TV on, it is an excellent picture, but after about 5 mins of watching SKY the picture quality is very hazy. If I switch the SKY + box off and on it resets and is very good again. But surely this is not correct.

So I am looking for any suggestions you people may have to help me.

The picture quality is not as good either on the the normal channels not going through SKY, sometimes it is like watching shadows moving on screen.

Any help is appreciated, maybe a whisky next time your out.

Thanks

Hmm... slightly concerned that you state the tv is not HD ready from the outset... are you basically looking for a reason to exchange it for something else?

If you have a 42" but it is only displaying 576p resolution it simply isnt going to be that great - the resolution was not setup with the idea of being shown on such a large screen but if you are sitting far enough away it shouldnt be too bad.

The obvious things to try first is to plug a DVD player into the same scart lead/ socket as the sky currently does. If you have the same problem then trying switching the scart cable with a decent brand like QED or IXOS. If the problem goes then it would seem to be a sky problem.

No not looking for an excuse at all to take it back..I took a decision not to purchase HD because I think it was another £400 for the dame TV please new box and subscription when I believe the rpice will drop over the next 3-5 years. I only stated it was not HD ready because I wanted to pass on all the information I know.

Anyway, please can you explain what you mean by "only displaying 576p resolution ". I am not very technical when it comes to TV's.

I will try what you suggest with the DVD but only after the football has finished.

My query really is that fact that it is an excellent picture for 5 mins but it tends to go hazy when you change channels.

Thanks for the advise, any more is appreciated.

You screen is made up of dots... on a standard resolution screen you have 576 rows of dots going down the screen no matter if you have a 14" screen or a 60" screen... the bigger the screen therefore the bigger the dots and arguably the worse the picture will be - like zooming in to a picture on a pc.

The P bit is about how it is drawn - traditionally it was "interlaced" (i) and this means the screen drew all the odd lines of frame 1 then all the even lines of frame 1 then replaced the odd lines with the lines of frame 2 then replaced the even lines with the lines of frame 2 so effectively 50% of the time you are seeing 1/2 of the current picture and 1/2 the previous picture. P (or progressive scan) means that the screen actually draws all the lines at the same time and then replaces them all with the next frame - the result should be a much better picture - generally they look more stable.

There are a number of possible causes that can cause the problems you describe. The first thing to eleminate is a fault with Sky hence the switch in a DVD player whilst keeping everything else constant. If that repeats the problem then a cable is a cheap (ish) way of eleminating another common area of problem (and even if it isnt the problem having a decent scart cable is never a bad thing)
