How to Record in DD 5.1

Hi, I am new here.

I bought a LG LH-RH7506 home cinema system last week. Here is how I connected them to my TV and Sky+:

Scart from Sky+ (AV1) to TV (AV1)
Scart from LG (AV1) to TV (AV2)
Scart from LG (AV2) to Sky+ (AV2)
Optical from Sky+ to LG

My problems are:

1. To get DD 5.1 from a Sky movie, I had to set LG to Optical mode (by pressing AV button on the LG remote). If I stay in AV2 mode I only get standard stereo sound. Is this right?
2. I cannot record the movie whilst in Optical mode - I had to switch to AV2 to do it, but therecording is only in standard stereo not DD 5.1. What have I done wrong?

Help/advice are appreciated.

I'm guessing - but could be wrong - that your problem is because of one of two things:

1) the optical input on the LG unit ONLY relates to a particular AV input (AV1 it would seem)

2) it simply can't record in DD.

I should think it is the first one, so try changing them around a bit.

I don't believe there is a domestic DVDr (with ot without HDD) that can record the DD audio from any external source, Philips have long promised one but it's never appeared.

All DVD recorders lay down a Dolby Digital 2.0 track, but this is taken from the analogue inputs from your Sky/Freeview/cable box, so it not really Dolby Digital!

I wish DVD recorder manufacturers would hurry up with optical and coaxial inputs for Dolby Digital from a source like a Sky+ box! Even better would be to have a 100% digital setup, taking digital signals for both picture and sound from whatever you use, but that will not happen because of copy protection.

Aldi sold a dvd recorder about a month ago that was marketed as being the only one able to record 5.1.
Tevion or Medion or something, and if memory serves it was only about £80.

I seriously doubt that.
Philips have long promised a recorder with 5.1 inputs but never delivered.
I would be surprised if one of those cheap crappy supermarket junkheaps was able to record in 5.1 ahead of Pioneer or Panasonic.
And I think many of the ome cinema sites and forums would be buzzing
