What is a fair guarantee for equipment costing around a thousand pound. Is the 12month statutory guarantee keeping pace with what people expect to pay for say a tv to-day.

Monitors usually come with a manufacturers 3 year swap out warranty these days.

You just need to register it, sending proof of date of purchase (the receipt usually).

Oh yes, they arrange collection and delivery. It does mean you need to keep your box, or have adequate packing available - because they won't leave the replacement without being able to take the original.

Swaps are usually refurbished items, so you could get a 2 year old model for your 2 month old one. But if the model is a new one, they can't do that, obviously.

Depends what it is... something like a pair of speakers I would expect a warrenty of 3-5 years... for a plasma screen for £1k I would expect 12 months.

I must admit to finding your response a little odd. You consider it acceptable that you might only get a years use from a Plasma tv costing a £1000.

Guarantees are based on the length of time that the manufacturer believes that the product should last without problems. I know this as this is what i was told by Panasonic after the failure of my plasma screen.

I had a problem with the 2 1/2 year old plasma which cost £5k and was "beyond economical" repair and out of guarantee. I was none too impressed i can tell you, but such is life!

Yes I have a 17" Monitor-TV with a 3yr guarantee. I thought it odd that if I go and buy a large screen TV etc they could offer a 12month guarantee. Infact some TV-Monitors as against Monitor-TV only have a 12 month guarantee. I just wondered how people felt about spending a £1000 pound or more if they are only offered the security of a 12 month guarantee.

Well, that is rather a strange question, if you'll excuse me - nobody will be exactly ecstatic at only getting a 12 month guarantee - but it's a matter of what is offered. The only way to improve it is to vote with your money.

Until recently I would recommend the 5 year guarantee offered by John Lewis but see my post regarding my 3 half year old TV which needs a new tube and is deemed to be uneconomical to repair so I have only been offered a small amount towards a new set. This is depite John Lewis Direct offering an equivalent replacement if the set is unable to be repaired. Some credit cards offer an additional years guarantee. Nationwide credit card offer this but not sets with freeview.

No, I think it is acceptable that I only get 1 years warrenty on it.

Plasmas are relatively high/ new tech and £1000 is very much budget - combine the 2 and you dont expect to get a good warrenty with it.

The other item I compared it to, speakers, are low/ old tech and at £1000 they are upper middle range in quality terms - these 2 combined I would expect a much better warrenty.

If you look at the sales of goods act and associated guidelines with them they basically confirm that "reasonable life" will consider things like the level of technology and where in the relative spectrum of prices the items are. I would however expect a £1k plasma to last much longer than 1 year.

Surely the problem is the massive profits companies make on insurance. I dont take insurance on anything. I feel plasma/lcd have too many problems in the past and this has rubbed off with no one offering long term insurance.

I noted before that you were offered £200 or thereabouts by John Lewis.
I was looking in a local ex catalogue shop her on the east coast n yorks. They had new 32" widescreen crt tvs by Goodmans and another maker for around £230 and that included extras DVD player etc. Might be worth looking around and taking the offer. I am sticking with my 32" tv myself until things settle with the LCDs and Plasma. I don't think the price will come down until after the world cup frenzy dies down.
