communicators, 2 way radios

Hi I remember a friend used to have 2 personal organisers that could communicate with each other like a text message if they were within about 10 metres of each other. Does anything like that exist now?

Also, some of the 2 way radios on Argos have call alerts so does that mean they work like a phone?
