Poor Picture With Toshiba 32WLT66 On Sky
I recently got the Toshiba 32WLT66, and its an unbelievable tv with great pcitures in HD etc, but for some reason whenever I switch on sky, on some channels the picture quality is extremely poor.
I get noticable blocks appear now and then, and the picture can be quite grainy at times it does this on most channels, but not all of them. Have I got some settings incorrect, or maybe there is another way I can connect my sky+ without scart but with a better picture? |

Since you are seeing different results on different channels then it's reasonably safe to say you are seeing how the compression used by digital broadcasters and the quality of the source material affects the final picture.
All HD panels have to take SD sources and scale them up, if there is not enough picture information there for a good SD image then turning it into HD resolution is going to make it look even worse. The quality of the content will vary as well from film or video and NTSC to PAL conversions and as for grain sometimes that is used for effect but gets exagerrated when scaling up to a HD resolution. If you are going to watch SD Dsat pictures then make sure you are using RGB scart, turn down sharpness and if possible reduce any extra digital processing that is going on. |

Thanks for the reply
What can I expect when I get a sky HD box which im ordering next month? I know what sort of quality HD is like, is it quite impressive though? Im looking forward to getting it now, just wondered what people think of it, and if they think its worth it. |

On my 32WLT66 - the HMDI connection for regular SD Sky channels via the HD box knocks spots off the SCART connection.
There is conversion done to the SD channels in the HD box. |

All HD displays benefit by having top notch source material which in todays market is HD so you will be getting the best performance from the Tosh with SKY HD. The SD content can if you so choose be upscaled by the SKY+ HD and sent via HDMI which would remove one digital-analogue stage which should mean a cleaner signal to work with. However there is only so much effective processing you can do on any program, if it's really high compression then it will still look poor compared to the higher bitrate SD channels. HD looks very nice, I've been used to SD being processed by my Iscan HD so the jump from good SKY/DVD upscaled to HD and native HD is not that big a leap but even then there is still a marked difference and of course more DD5.1 audio although not on everything. If it's worth £299 for the box and another tenner subscription is a question for theindividual but for me it's money well spent
