I'm getting sky+ very soon, and want to upgrade my current home cinema kit to a DVD recorder.

The kit I've got at the moment was an all-in-one solution so the subwoofer/amp will have to be changed (I guess I can keep the external speakers), but I want a new system with a DVD-Recorder and Optical inputs.
I'm on a budget but not a really tight one, about £300.

My TV is a 28" CRT from Panasonic (can't quite justify HD LCD with my wife yet! ), but I've at least swung this one.
Anyone got any recommendations?

I know I'm going to be looking at a separate AMP and DVD Recorder, if I need to get new satellite speakers then so be it.

Seriously,if thats all you want to spend then buy a dvd recorder on its own.
With £300 you can buy one with a HDD built in so you can use it for editing your recordings before you burn them to dvd,then play them on your existing setup.
No dvd recorder will have an optical input anyway.
So instead of penny pinching ,keep what you have an add to it,or be prepared to spend more.
It certainly IS possible to buy everything very cheap,but you'll end up with a nasty supermarket dvd recorder.
As you will be getting Sky+ you will watch anything you record on that,so the only reason yu would need a dvd recorder is to archive/collect dvd's.
If so, a HDD is a must.Recording direct to dvd is messy and produces tacky results.
And getting everything for £300 is unlikely to offer any improvement over what you already have,so keep it.

Panasonic DM-ERS10 can be had now for around the ton, I don't really see the need to get one with an HD built in, and I'd query why mongosito thinks the results are tacky. With that particular recorder, the results in XP mode (1 hr) are brilliant.

You're still gonna need an amp and speakers, and you'd do well to gte that for the remaining £200. If you can squeeze another ton out of the wife then you might just do it.

HDD is required to make recordings that need editing.
With your ES10 you can only edit on RAM which won't play on other players.
Recording to -R without a HDD results in messy presentation if any editing is needed.
I know the picture quality on the Panasonic is fine,its the editing I was referring to.
As he will have Sky+ he will watch recordings on that.
The only time he would need the recorder is to archive something.
Unless its an uninterrupted movie ,archiving to -R perfectly would be difficult

Tesco do a Technika dvd recorder for around £70.

I got one and the recording quality is just as good as my £400 philips recorder.

One interesting thing is that you can record the box office movies with it, whereas the philips wouldn't as the stream is protected.

The specs include, component video out, optical out and progressive scan.

Nice little machine, the first one I got was dead out of the box but the replacement is grand. You even get a free dvdR disc !
