Unnecessary swearing in songs

I got a copy today of James Blunt's Back To Bedlam today for my son who is 6. I thought I would listen to it today as I like a couple of his songs. I noticed in 'Beautiful' the words 'flying high' were changed to '****ing high'. I'm glad I listened to it first now. I am certainly not a ****ing ( ) prude but what was the point in it?

I imagine those will be the original lyrics its just they've changed it in the single and tv releases to get it past the censor. I remember my mum freaking out when I was mid teens when she bought me a beautiful south album and the album lyrics weren't dont marry her have me and had changed to don't marry her f*ck me

When I was a kid Mum took my 45 of The Stranglers 'Peaches' away when she heard the lyrics!

Was there a parental advisory sticker on the James Blunt album? Do they even use them much over here, compared to the UK?

Don't know, it didn't come with a case.

There was a parental advisory sticker on James Blunt's album. I was in HMV looking for something else when a woman asked me where the album was. When I pointed it out she thanked me and told me it was for her 9 year old granddaughter. I told her about the explicit lyrics and so she decided against buying it.

It's shocking. I was amazed to find rude words on a CD, too, when I bought 'If you don't want to f*** me, baby, f*** off' by Wayne County.

Why can't they warn us?

I don't have a problem with listening to swearing on records, but I do often think that songwriters put swearing in for the sake of it. I can't think of any examples off the top of my head at the moment..

But then you get songs, such as Creep by Radiohead where (in my eyes - or should that be ears?) the lyrics are perfectly justified because It's clear that he's showing his emotion through every single word he uses in that song.

I don't think it should be played in its original form on daytime radio though.

Along the same lines is swearing during live shows and concerts. One of the worst offenders, imho,is Canadian singer Kathleen Edwards. I've seen her several times and she swears rather a lot on stage, most of it unnecessairily. The first time I saw her, within five minutes she'd told us about the traffic warden who'd given her a parking ticket, describing him as a 'f***ing c**t',and at another gig a friend reported that there were problems with the sound and she swore first at the sound man and then at the audience.

It means that if my son wants to the album I will have to skip that bit which is a shame.

Aimee Mann has done this on a couple of songs and I hate it - to me, if you write a great song with great, intelligent lyrics, it's very disappointing to have cuss words in the middle. Apart from that, she's brilliant so I just wonder why ???

Have to agree with you there. it's a brilliant song as it is, I was gutted when I bought the album - what a way to ruin a song! I don't mind cursing in songs either, but it just seemed totally wrong when he sang it that way!

He really emphasises the word as well and sings it really clearly. Now I am going to have to get him his second choice album instead which is Shane Wards. Grrrrrr!

Oh my god! That's not the best album either - way too many covers on it. Has Louis Walsh written all over it! Was gonna say get him Robbie's album but that's got a few dodgy lyrics in it & all!
