okay so i know its not totaly relevant to DVD but it is about digital video so here goes

i have heard a lot of positive info lately on the tivo which is basicly a large hard disk that is used to digitaly record programs from TV and it is supposed to allow you to pause live broadcasts and fastforward ads
i would be very interested in any information that people have on this product or if any one owns one
or if any brand is better than the other as i have heard that sony, thompson and phillips make these tivo products

Also info on the connections on these boxes would be useful as the one i saw being reviewed only had composite or s-video connections which would be no good for me as i have a pace NTL digital box which only has RGB or composite output(i would want to make use of the RGB of the cable system as i currently do)

You have to pay a monthly subscription to tivo, which os sad, and unlike videos, you can't watch them again, so It's a bit sad.

I don't have a Tivo box but I am very eagerly awaiting the Pace XTV box which is due Q1 (or December 2001 on Sky's calendar!). It's only for Sky though.

You can watch recordings multiple times. Personal video (or television) recorders are not for archive recordings. They are for time-shifting. With 40gb you will not want to waste it keeping progs. You can transfer them to video at your leisure (and you could cut the ads as you do so).

BTW you cannot skip ads unless you are watching a buffered live TV broadcast. You cannot jump ahead of the actual broadcast. I've heard many radio discussions fail to understand this crucial point. Lets say you want to watch the Simpson's at 18:00. Set the box to record it (or use the special live TV buffer) and then start watching it at 18:05. The box continues to record while you watch which you cannot do with video. When you reach the ads you fast forward. You will probably be very close to original transmission but have saved 5 mins by starting it later. In fact for multiple eps you would need to start about 15 mins later to avoid catching up.
