Pioneer PDP-503HDE and scaling
I have a 503HDE (bought Aug 2002) which I currenly use with a Pioneer DV-747A DVD player bought at the same time. This is an excellent player for its day both visually and sonically (DVD-A/SACD/Audio CD performance is excellent). It's NTSC progressive only.
The plasma is XGA so should be able to do something useful with hi-def signals, but has no DVI/HDMI. I gather some players - such as the Denon DVD-1920 - offer DVD scaling on the component outputs. So questions:\ 1. Has anyone experience of DVD scaling on the 503 - are the results worth having? 2. Can anyone recommend a universal player with audio/video performance at least as good as the 747 which offers component scaling? Is the Denon comparable for example? 3. What happens if the 503 is fed PAL progressive - can it handle it? Nigel |

As I understand it the licensing for DVD players prevents upscaled content from being offered via component however the Samsung range do have a hack, the Denon only provides 720p/1080i via HDMI.
The 1920 is a midrange player and while I am happy with it's DVD-A/SACD and NTSC/PAL progressive output it's not in the same league as the big guns from both Denon and Pioneer. For specifics on players and the 503HDE the AVForums may be more useful than DS
