Sugababes erase history
(Friday June 09, 2006 10:27 AM)

Sugababes have re-recorded a host of original tracks for their upcoming greatest hits, to erase the vocals of founding member Siobahn Donaghy, it has been claimed.

The group's Heidi Range confirmed earlier this week that they're putting together a best of for release at the end of the year.

According to reports, the compilation will not feature any of Donaghy's vocals, which will be re-done by those of her replacement Heidi Range.

Donaghy quit the band in 2001, later going on to a fairly unsubstantial career as a solo artist. Apparently Amelle Barabbah, who replaced Mutya Buena in 2005, will not be re-recording her vocals.

Sugababes released their new single, "Follow Me Home", on Monday.

Sorry I'm a day late but I thought this diserved some mention. So it appears Sugababes want to erase their own history and presend Siobahn was never a part of the group by having Heidi re-record all of her vocals on their Greatest Hits collection.

I think this is cheap and really unfair on Siobahn, it's rediculous if you ask me. I don't mind the changes that have been made in the line-up in recent years but Siobahn was part of the group once and surely that must be acknowledged.

I'm boycotting their Greatest Hits as I can make my own version WITH Siobahn rightfully a part of it.

i guess it's less about erasing the originals, as re-recording tracks as a cynical attempt to get fans to buy reworked versions of old songs.

even then, perhaps that's less cynical - as at least people will be able to get different versions, rather than the same versions they might already have.

also - maybe the CD will include both versions.

Why should Siobahn be given any credit when she's not returned from the toilet?

They want to make an album with Heidi's vocals (she has been there longer than Siobahn in the public's eyes).

think thats poor really..and a waste of time.

it always annoys me when bands mess up their own greatest hits (like Destenys child called theres No1's yet it had several songs that wernt no1 anywhere in the world!) or when artists do greatest hits to early

why can it just be all the big singles in chronological order! grrr

dunno why it winds me up so much, it just does

I don't think the fact that Heidi has been in the public eye more than Siobahn has anything to do with it, it's really unfair to remove someone's body of work and pretend like she was never part of it.

I will still buy the greatest hits cd because I think it will be brilliant but I do thinkthey should have given Siobhan credit and kept her vocals, namely because she was one of the founding members of the group and helped them get where they are now - in a way - I know they got dropped early on.

I don't think Overload, New Year, Run For Cover and Soul Sound will sound the same if they are re-recorded.

Definately wouldn't be the same, those first 4 singles show their youth and the fact that it was the beginning. Very true what you said about Siobahn being the founding member and helped them get to where they were, if not no-one would have cared about the Sugababes comeback with Heidi.

I hope the sales are low just to prove re-recording the old songs was a bad move, but I see it selling rather well coz of the more recent singles.

Yeah I think of their earlier singles Overload is the only well known one, and to a certain extent Run For Cover. Soul Soun barely made an impact, though I liked it, and New Year is a Christmas song and rarely gets played at Christmas I think!

I wonder if Siobahn will be "Magically" edited out of the early videos if the Sugababes release a greatest hits DVD?

Why not release a two disk edition with old versions on the main disk and a bonus second disk with new versions and a few b-sides.

Would sell more at any rate surely?

SUGABABES EXPLAIN 'GREATEST HITS' DILEMMA

THE SUGABABES have officially announced that some of the old songs on their imminent "Greatest Hits" album will feature both Heidi and Amelle's vocals.

"We went into the studio today to re-record some of our past hit singles," says founding member Keisha Buchanan.

Newcomer Amelle Berrabah was devastated when she found out that she wasn't allowed to replace Buena's vocals.

"I'm not allowed to re-record Mutya's parts," Berrabah reported. "I was really annoyed, 'cos obviously I wanted to sing on all of the tracks in the Greatest Hits. The record company said that we had to get permission from Mutya first, so Keisha rang her up."

"Mutya told me that she didn't want Amelle to replace her vocals," claims Keisha. "So Mutya will be on the Greatest Hits, but the other girl won't."

The other girl? Keisha is of course referring to ex-member Siobhan Donaghy, one of the original founding members of the band.

"I've recorded all of her parts already," says Heidi, the smiley one. "The songs don't sound as good as the originals, though."

Keisha explains, "The reason that we were allowed to replace the other girl's vocals is because we didn't need her permission. Those songs were owned by our old record label, but Universal bought them. So now we can do anything we want with them."

"Everything is going so well -- Me, Heidi, Amelle, and Mutya will all be on the Greatest Hits. It's really exciting."

Too bad for the 'other girl', though.

Siobhan wasn't unfairly kicked out of the band by evil network execs, she quit. It was her choice, so I say "go Sugababes."

That article looks fake to me - surely Amelle didn't really say she was "annoyed" that she wasn't allowed to sing Mutya's bits? And Keisha wouldn't refer to her as "the other girl" and I would imagine that the reason the early songs had to be re-recorded was that Universal don't own the rights to the original recordings.

Hmmm, wouldn't surprise me if that article was true...sounds like the Sugababes alright.

You can say she quit the band all you want, and she did, but I still think it's unfair, wouldn't you be if you heard someone redid all your work and apssed it off as their own and pretended they didn't exsist?

This is so rediculous, and it seems really unfair on Amelle. How come Heidi can sing a past member's lines but Amelle can't? At this rate, She will only be on Red Dress and Follow Me Home, she must be really pissed off, I know I would be!

it says thats due to who owns the rights though, if mutya doesnt want her vocals re-recording...theres little they can do about it

whereas before (on there old record deal) shiobhan didnt have any rights..so they could get 50cent to rap her parts if they felt like it, as she has no say in it.

I dont think it really matters. The fact is that they can do what they like with the older songs and they are obviously going to take advantage of that. It doesnt sound particularly fair on Siobhan (or Amelle) but that's life.

I would have thought there is the issue of peformace royalties too if they'd left shiobhan on the tracks. Probably don't really want to have to spilt money if they don't have too.

Personally, I think they should just stick all the songs on as they are, why the hell bother going to all the trouble of replacing people's vocals - Red Dress sounds crap with Amelle's vocals, they shoulda kept Mutya's - BUT I understand why theu did it because it was their next single after Amelle had joined, however why go to the bother of replacing those from 2000/01, they are in the past and don't realy need redone. I know many people don't like this or haven't said it but Siobhan's vocals on the first four songs are actually good, put their troubles aside she was a good singer. There were 5 members who have contributed in total to the Sugababes success and as one of the founding members I feel Siobhan should be given a mention at least. For heaven's sake it's only four singles, compared to the mass they have done after she left. It's almost as if they are trying to pretend Siobhan was never in the band.

I am also interested in seeing how the front cover of the G.Hits is going to look. What members will be on it?

Finally to finish, I feel it's unfair that Amelle feels annoyed because she can't replace Mutya. Mutya was a well established member of the group, it's not as if people have forgotten who she is already!

Rant over at last, this is possibly the longest post I have ever written!

I think this is kinda unfair to the girls who used to be in the band. I mean, she wasn't the one who made them who they are in the first place. Actually, she deserves no credit whatsoever until they actually release a new album with actual NEW music.

Only one of them is getting their bits replaced. And the girl who's replacing them has been in the band longer than the original one as well.

That's not the point, Siobhan Donaghy was one of the founder members, Heidi wasn't, she at least deserves some sort of mention!

It is actually probably correct to say that without Siobhan their probably would not be a Sugababes!

Siobhan, Keisha and Mutya were the founder members and created the band when they were young - sorry but if I was Siobhan I would sure as hell want a mention.
