On the BBC Click this morning they were talking about HD TV and the presenter said that it has HDCP which prevents recording and distributing to all your friends!

Does this mean that you cannot record from HD TV? Or am I barking up the wrong tree?

(I've tried to make the title in capitals but it doesn't want to know!)

The answer is , as it is on Analogue and Digital , May be ....

So some HD content e.g Feature films - are unlikely to be able to be recorded through an open interface ( like macrovision ) ( this may mean that a closed PVR can hold the film so you can see it later )

Others - like BBC ONE News - are likely to be able to be recorded

At this time there is no practical or cheap way to record HD content so the use of HDCP is not that big an issue
When we finally get recordable HD-DVD and Blu-ray then HDCP can prevent a program from being recorded to external media and if allowed the program may only be recorded once or even a resulting disk could be prevented from playing on a second player.

There is a lot of tricks in DRM type systems and the consumer may well be in for a shock if the media industry get their way however it may not be as bad as it could be for those only interested in "fair use".

The reason I ask is that I like to keep a library of my favourite programmes and clips (as probably 90% of the population do). It would be a shame if we were not allowed to do that anymore.

It's unlikely fair use would vanish altogether but the HD recorders will certainly not be cheap when they launch and the blank media will be very pricey

Something like SKY+ HD or other HD DVR may the short term answer by using a hard drive to store content onboard as opposed to disk based media.
