Buying a PVR for Homechoice

Hi all,

I'm new to this forum so sorry if this topic has already been covered somewhere! I'm moving home next week and the only TV options open to me are Freeview and Homechoice, I've opted for HC but having come from a Sky+ home I'm desperate to know if a PVR will work with HC, if it will record all the channels I subscribe to on there (including Sky movies and Sky sports) and if anyone can recommend a PVR that's definitely compatible with HC.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Tivo definitely works with HC. Try Ebay.

How good is TiVo with the box timeouts etc?

I've held off using my TiVo with HC but if you can offer info that it works well then I may just give it a try.

It would simplify my cabling a little to shift the Freeview box out of the way.

Is there a Tivo out there that is capable of recording 2 channels simultaneously these days? Most half dedent PVR's do now don't they? Not sure if Tivo does though...?

I don't know about Tivo but you're not going to get 2 streams out of the HC box anyway.

(Unless you're talking about using a Terrestrial signal for one of the streams... )

So - seeing that I have a pretty new TV that has built in Freeview - and if I get HC on top of that, could I (using my PVR) record one channel from Freeview, and one from HC...?

The current crop of Twin Tuner Freeview PVR's do not allow you to record from an external source (in this case either your IDTV or your Homechoice). This is because they record the MPEG stream that is transmitted by Freeview and not the decoded picture that is displayed on your screen and so in order for them to be able to record from an external device they would need to have an MPEG encoder which would in turn raise the cost of the device.

If you wish to record form an External device then your best bets are a DVD recorder or a second hand Tivo (which you should be able to pick up from E-Bay) although this would only allow you to record one thing at once.

Thanks a lot for the advice.. can you recommend (or know of) any PVR's that have MPEG encoders? If not, the Tivo option will have to do I guess.
